It's honestly kind of mind boggling that Mojang decided to have hoppers constantly checking for items above them every tick rather than items checking if the the block they're on or above is a hopper only when moved.

I know this was discussed a bit in another set of comments, but snapshots have recently changed the behavior to let solid blocks stop them from trying to pick up items. This wouldn't include blocks like mud or soul sand. This did affect some honey farm designs, but there are new blocks tags that allow some blocks to become exceptions now
