We experienced a MASSIVE RAID failure on Whonnock server and lost a crapload of data. Can we get it back? All of our data is GONE!

You need an editor. Just some constructive criticism. Have a good day.

Summary:
1) myth FreeNAS setup needs high CapEx. You don't have to provided you strategize.
2) UNRAID using any caching. Configure dual Cache drives in RAID1.
3) Never blindly trust SSDs. Everything is prone to fail.
4) One likely disadvantage of FreeNAS, is that it is not based on Linux. Sometimes you may get lack of hardware support/drivers etc.
5) FreeNAS L2ARC, ZIL, again dont just use one SSD.
6) UNRAID parity drives, start with 2 drives. Not just one parity drive.
7) UNRAID rebuild upon a disk failure replacement, is always quite tricky.
8) FreeNAS (or any ZFS) based setup, you get redundant storage volume as a part of its file system. vs traditional RAID.
9) Avoid using Hardware RAID, especially SMB/Home setup.
10) UNRAID has an advantage since it is Linux based.

Conclusion: Both are good in some way for an average home user. But still long way to go. Both have their own limits. UNRAID is a step in the right direction, since it is unlike anything existed before. Having said it has to mature.

Thanks for the video, it helped me a lot to decide what exactly I don't want for my NAS built.. Btw have you tried OpenMediaVault..?? Its a NAS OS based on Debian and has a ZFS plug-in that you could install and configure your volumes in ZFS.. Would be great if you could tinker a bit and give your take on it maybe in some future video.. Cheers..

Hi Kiran,

I have an almost 5 year old system with the following config:
CPU AMD FX 6300 6 Core
Motherboard ASUS M5A97 R2.0
RAM GSkill 8GB DDR3
Graphics Card Sapphire R9 270X

AMD SB950 controller : 6 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), gray, Support Raid 0, 1, 5, 10

I am thinking of turning it into a FreeNAS box.
I wish to use this only as a backup solution running at most 1 hour each day.
My data requirements are quite low. I currently have less than 1TB of data that I would like to protect.
The data contains important documents, some personal projects, passwords etc. i.e. mostly small files.
At most I would plan for 2TB of usable disk space.

How many disks and in what configuration should I use for a home FreeNAS server with the above requirements.
Do I need more RAM? Do I need ECC RAM?
Do I need to use the onboard RAID controller? I don't have any experience setting up RAID.
Would mirroring 2 disks suffice? What RAID configuration do I need i.e. RAID-Z[1-3] etc.? Do I need a separate disk for cache, logs etc.
As I am in India, cost is a concern.

Also could you please do a video on your setup?
What system are you using for your 10 disk setup?
