A critical favorite at this year's Cannes Festival, where it took the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard, this wickedly funny and precisely observed psychodrama tells the story of a model Swedish family—handsome businessman Tomas, his willowy wife Ebba and their two blond children—on a skiing holiday in the French Alps. The sun is shining and the slopes are spectacular but during a lunch at a mountainside restaurant an avalanche suddenly bears down on the happy diners. With people fleeing in all directions and his wife and children in state of panic, Tomas makes a decision that will shake his marriage to its core and leave him struggling to reclaim his role as family patriarch.

This movie was so good, I found it at 2:30 in the morning and was just crying, laughing and loving how brilliant the director was to be able to capture all of our human emotions, kudos to everyone!

Who else is here after seeing the trailer for downhill? The trailers are almost scene for scene!

As a married male viewer, the closing scene of 'Downhill' resonated deeply with me. The moment when the four of them share laughter and hugs, it seems like all worries vanish into thin air. However, when the roof's snow suddenly falls, everyone hurriedly dodges, revealing a sense of self-protection. This moment couldn't help but make me think about the helplessness and reality within marriage. Even though there's an apparent atmosphere of reconciliation, the internal struggles are undeniable. The actors' performances and the scene's design complement each other, making this scene the pinnacle of the entire film. It's a realization about life.

The entire movie not only made me reflect on the characters' actions but also prompted deep contemplation about marriage and human nature. Therefore, I hope scenes like this become a mirror for the audience, sparking profound reflections between spouses. In the journey of life, we all need to bravely face difficulties and honestly consider each other's needs. 'Downhill' is precisely that kind of film, urging both partners in a marriage to work together towards a more mature and resilient relationship through intense emotions and inspirational scenes

Thank you to those who told me that it was not a real film. My God, I cannot describe to you the extent of my sorrow and my heart's denial of the screaming of the child.😭

FORCE MAJEURE

Director Ruben Östlund manages to stretch his film for two hours, based on a single, devastating question: do we really know those people we think we know?
Many things are taken for granted in the relationship, important subjective matters are never mentioned, until a dreadful event that threats their lives confronts them with a disparity of reactions that triggers a cascade of doubts, quickly shared by others who find themselves unexpectedly involved. Östlund reveals an exquisite control of the environment, which accompanies the growing feeling of estrangement and coldness of the woman towards her husband.
The point is well made in the first hour and a half of the movie. But the director does not stop there. The last scenes on the bus repeat the concept, this time from the female perspective: how would a woman react in a desperate situation?. That outcome is worth seeing.

Ruben Ostlund's genre is perfectly defined as "social commentary satire"

It's an excellent movie that makes you question yourself in a really honest and unsettling way. It's far too easy to just say, of course I wouldn't do that! How do you overide instinct?

I've seen this movie 3 times and it never occured to me that people are considering it as a strong comedy over a drama? I thought it just handled the drama with a little amusement, nothing that had you leaving the cinema talking about how hilarious it was. Kind of like Marriage Story. It handles drama with a little comedy sometimes, but it isn't considered hilarious persay. I am questioning my humanity at how differently I've interpreted Force Majeure? Can anyone weigh in on this. The funniest dark comedy drama I've ever seen, cerebral but not pretentious.

By reading some of the comments, I see some people didn’t get the actual subject of the movie.
We are not supposed to laugh at Tomas’s but we only do because he is a man and he’s supposed to act heroic. His behaviour is not only more typical but also sensical.Great movie!

Loved this, it was so deft. By the end everyone is exposed to an unexamined part of themselves, their positions are reversed, talent and flaws equally distributed.
