So true that the best managers are often those who had no intention of going into management.

It's pretty cool to see the young Steve Jobs, you can see the fire in his eyes, and great energy.

2:14 "You know who the best managers are?
They're the great individual contributors, who never ever want to be a manager.
But decide they have to be a manager because nobody else is gonna do as good a job as them."
I concur.

Clicking on this, I was expecting to hear a great quote form Steve Jobs (purportedly) which was printed on a postcard pinned up in an office where I once worked. 'We don't hire smart people to tell them what to do. We hire smart people so that they can tell us what to do'.

Steve Job's greatest power is his high social skills and the natural understanding of people's psychology.

If your company is not hiring experts in whatever it is that it does then you've got bigger problems than whatever your managers are up to. The best managers I've worked with let people do what they did best while ensuring accountability from everyone, including themselves. It's not terribly complicated, imo.

I never wanted to be a manager. Always wanted to be just a SW dev. Once a manager said to me: "I don't get what's "wrong" with you. Everybody else wants to move up the ladder, to get into managing." I told him "I just want to be a good engineer. I just want to write good software. I'm not interested in dealing with people.". Also, just tell me what needs to be done and I'll do my best to provide the best quality I can within the available time. If I have questions or I need support I'll come and ask. But don't keep me in meetings and have me writing detailed reports as those kind of things diminish my productivity a lot.
I am not trying to say I am at the same level of drive and skill as these guys in the video, but I definitely get what they are saying.

one thing Steve was really good at was articulation of his thoughts into words, yet overall I still don't find him as someone I would like to hang out with in a family dinner :)

this is so true in the workforce of course and the fact that still is a valid statement only proves Steve's amazing wisdom. Learning so much from this Kat.

"You know who the best managers are? They are the great individual contributors who never ever wanted to be a manager but, decide they have to be a manager because no one else is going to be able to do it as good as them" nothing to add your Honour!

Soon going to be managing a team of 3 for the first time in my career. I am nervous, but I think the best thing to do is just continueing to work the way I have been working so far and communicate as transparent and clear as possible with my team. At the end of the day the managers you respect the most are the ones that actually work themselves, right?

The best people for a job are those smart enough to do it well, but dumb enough to believe it's the most important thing in the world

What Steve says about management also applies to global political leadership.

- Most management is about making employees do what they don't understand, or don't want to do.
- Smart mgt ensures its employees know what to do, and helps them want to do it.
- Exceptional mgt doesn't ask an employee to do what is unethical or against the best interests of the employee....This mgt helps employees get what they want.

- There's very few of the third....because most employees don't know what they want, let alone a fair price for it.
