Jean-Paul Sartre: Bad Faith

In this video, Professor Thorsby discusses Chapter 2, "Bad Faith" from Being and Nothingness by Jean-Paul Sartre. Sartre's analysis of consciousness leads him to a discussion of Bad Faith. Bad Faith is Sartre's term for understanding the condition in which freedom freely denies itself. In an act of negation (which is freedom), the self is able to deny that they are what they are. In other words, how can we make sense of when we lie to ourselves. In a fascinating discussion, we discuss the way in which consciousness acts freely against itself.

I found you by accident 4 years ago. I was not a student but I found your lectures so interesting that I watched your lecture series and read the books you recommended. I have a disability and thought there was no way I could go to Uni. After 4 years of reading and learning philosophy I thought I might as well give it a go, one unit at a time. And wouldn’t you know, the unit I’m doing is philosophy of mind, last week was Sartre and this week it’s Heidegger.
