First off, it’s a major city in Texas, so you know it brings those incredible Texas-infused flavors. But it’s also a gulf coast city, meaning it has seafood and Cajun influences built right in. And when you combine that with the fact that it’s one of the largest cities in the country and thus has people from all over the world living there, you get a dining scene that is incredibly eclectic. In this video, we take a look at a sampling of our favorites from Houston. Of course, being a major metropolis, there are countless spots that will set your taste buds soaring. So we aren’t claiming that this is an exhaustive list. But it’s a great set of restaurants that will certainly get you started on any culinary journey in this Texan city. We cover a wide swath of food types, from the down home Texas BBW of Truth BBQ, to the incredible and innovative Indian food at Pondicheri, to the Norwegian-infused gulf coast fish dishes at Golfstrømmen. You’ll never want for excellent food variety in Houston. We also cover some upscale spots like the Oaxacan delight, and Xochi, as well as total speakeasies like Tian Tian Lu Chuaner, a Chinese spot with no website and no reservations. Then there are some more famous Houston spots, like the newbie Nancy’s Hustle, and the perennial favorite, Theodore Rex. It’s a city full of amazing places to eat, and you’ll never run out of delightful spots in which to dine. So check out this video today, as Viewcation presents: The Best Restaurants in Houston, TX!

Ii have lived in Houston my entire life and have been in the food industry countless years, and I must say this video missed the boat by a mile. Houston offers world class Italian, Mexican and steakhouses as staples of great cuisine, and yet this presentation doesn’t mention one of these!!! That simply makes this unbelievable

I am really happy to see a video on how great the Houston dining scene really is. I read several articles in national magazines that stated that regarding new and innovative food dishes by restaurant chefs are tops in Los Angeles followed by Houston and stated that the restaurant leading the pack was Nancy’s Hustle. Pitching ace, Justin Verlander, said that one of his and his wife’s favorite restaurants in Houston was that same restaurant—Nancy’s Hustle. A lot of what the Houston dining scene is all about is the ethnic diversity of the city which is second on the NYC or maybe tied with it. With ethnic diversity comes small and medium size restaurants that grow into larger restaurants in some instances or stay small which is the owner/chef’s desire. There is no doubt that Houston has more steakhouses that any other city in the US. I can remember in the 1950s when there was only ONE steakhouse that served PRIME steaks—Brenner’s Steakhouse on I-10 West. Mr and Mrs. Brenner open that restaurant in the 1930s and they have been cooking the best steaks ever since. Now there are two Brenner’s in the City. Today, Brenner’s is joined by more steakhouses than you can ‘shake a stick at’ as the old saying goes. And that’s great, but it’s the small restaurants, and I just read the past week that Houston has 10, 000+ restaurants, and the medium size restaurants that serve excellent ethnic-based food that makes Houston’s restaurant scene so fantastic. Virtually every country in the world is represented in Houston and there’s a restaurant or 10 that matches those countries somewhere in the city.

Because of the breadth of Houston Metro area, all 10, 062 square miles of it, and the lack of zoning, there is almost one restaurant per every square mile in Houston. Of course that ranges from a hotdog from a food cart to a fine restaurant where the meal can run $250.00 or more and the bottle of wine can cost the diner $15, 000.00 or more if you are in the right restaurant. I’ll never forget that my wife and I were treated to a wonderful meal at a superb restaurant in an Uptown-area hotel in the mid-1980s. I did not see the tab he wrote off but I know that the entrée was $300.00 for both of us and the bottles of Chateau Margaux was $350 per bottle and we drank two of them. And these prices were 1980s prices not 2023.

You just picked expensive, not necessarily best tasting. Being a lifetime native, I dont believe you know what you're talking about.

Not the best list except for Truth BBQ which is incredible. Xochi is unique upscale traditional Mexican but Hugo’s menu is more approachable and is better. Where’s the Tex-Mex?? For those visiting, try Coltivare (Italian) Pappas Steakhouse, Cottonwood (burgers), Ninfa’s or Lupe Tortilla (Tex-Mex) or the many outstanding hole in the wall Tex-Mex restaurants and food trucks, and incredible pho spots throughout this great food city.

You had my ear until you said pondicheri. Including such a mid in a city that is the virtual epicenter of south Asian dining is downright embarrassing. Makes one think the entire list is self promotion by industry insiders.
