The Ghost Town is merely one of those old towns that sprang up in the Wild West period across the western parts of US and Canada and lasted for a few years or decades and were abandoned once the mines or whatever were exhausted. I think Las Brujas was mining town in 1800's and deserted when the ore veins ran out. It's a common origin stories of ghost towns around United States.

As for the lone house in the middle of mountain. It was either a hunter's cabin, a ranger outpost, or that weird White people culture to like to live a solitary life in the middle of nowhere.
