The science of why coffee is good for you

Is coffee actually good for you? How many cups a day is considered healthy? Is drip coffee worse than espresso? Joe Avella and Jessica Orwig answer these questions and more on the Facebook series "Science the $#!* out of it."

Turns out, coffee is good for you. But there's more to the story. There's a limit to how much caffeine you should drink. The FDA recommends no more than 400 mg of caffeine per day.

But be careful about what time of day you drink coffee, especially if you're sensitive to caffeine's effects. The half-life of caffeine is about six hours. So, if you have a cup of coffee at 8 am, 25% of the caffeine in that cup will still be in your system by 8 pm.

So, having coffee with your breakfast is probably better than sipping it with your dessert. Learn more about coffee as Avella and Orwig hash it out.

I was in the Philippines and we visited a 99 year old man. We took him a can of powdered milk, thinking it would be something he would like. He said that he never drank milk. He said he drunk coffee every day.

I like how you say it's the most popular psychoactive drug.. Of course... it's pretty much the only legal one

I ❤ love to drink a big cup in the AM, which is my reason for getting out of bed 🤣

I used to have a cup after lunch (never with sugar.) However, it would only make me tired. So, speaking of science, I conducted an experiment. I switched to ginger or peppermint herbal tea. The hydration and herbs gave me the boost I was seeking and removed the draining feeling of caffeine. And I fell asleep easier at bedtime.

The best ginger tea is Tulsi Lemon Ginger, by Organic India, hands down, IMHO. But it’s best in cooler months because ginger is heating. But Tulsi tea (without ginger) is amazing all year, it’s both relaxing and energizing - yay🎉

The six hour recommendation should also be applied to food and other substances as well.

I absolutely hate the taste of coffee, so I don’t drink it ever. Yet I am debating to start drinking one cup every morning to “cure” my extremely low blood pressure and dizziness. Is that a good idea?
