The victory of Nazi Germany shook the whole of Europe and almost completely destroyed the working class movement. Right-wing governments took the first steps towards adopting Hitler's tactics in Austria, France and Spain in 1934. Faced with revolutionary uprisings in Austria's neighboring states and at home, the ruling class saw that only the Social Democrats heading coalition governments could stop these movements. However, at a time when right-wing Catholic politicians were strong in the countryside and had a parliamentary majority, the Heimwehr, a paramilitary force inspired by Mussolini's success in Italy, was created and increasingly clashed with the Social Democrats' defense forces.
