I think something that gets overlooked and I'm constantly raging about is expandable phone storage. You don't have to use invasive cloud services at all if you have enough local storage (and backup/off load to a nas or desktop occasionally). After all the best way to securely store data is to have never transmitted it to a cloud in the first place.

Synology is proprietary so you're trading one ecosystem for another. Might not be as bad as the main players we think of when hearing "Big Tech", but important to point out nonetheless.

I think privacy is only the beginning of how big tech companies violate our lives. Read Unintentional by Doug Smith, a software developer who felt compelled by his faith to talk about this very subject and how many Christians’ lives are controlled. The book is not strictly religious, but he makes references to scripture in part of his arguments.

I’d like to host my own Fediverse social networks for my family to use. Is that something a Synology NAS can do? It would need to not just be limited to my own household. It would be for my family around the world. I have done some quick searches on YouTube in the past, but the results usually are few and pull up guides for using a third party hosting service with a subscription fee. I’d like this to be something hosted in my own home preferably a Mastodon server and a Pixelfed server. Hopefully not too complicated to setup? Is that something that exists?
