Welcome and thank you for watching!
Black Bear Pass Trail is a 8.5 mile moderately trafficked point-to-point trail located near Telluride, Colorado that features a waterfall and is rated as difficult. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from July until October.
Incredible views from high above Red Mountain Pass and Telluride. Close-up views of historic mines and dramatic waterfalls. Feel the mist from spectacular Bridal Veil Falls. Road is closed November through May 1. Switchbacks are one-way downhill; no return to start once you begin descent. Unlicensed vehicles should turn around before going down one-way switchbacks or have pick-up vehicle waiting at the bottom.
Most of the trail is easy to moderate. The difficult rating is based on a mile-long stretch of dangerous switchbacks above Bridal Veil Falls. Your vehicle should have low-range 4WD, good tires, good brakes, excellent articulation, and a fully functional emergency brake. The road is very narrow past the steps and is basically a rock shelf at points, with a drop off on your left and a rock wall on the right. Its not terribly challenging, but it may get to the nerves of some, This is where the trail gets its fame as the descent into Telluride starts, the road is narrow, rocky, and shows you a 1000' drop at points, but again, its just your nerves that get to you, its really not super challenging. The switchbacks are tight, but have room for a 3+ point turn depending on how close to the edge you're comfortable getting

It is a great video, but I also think these people are out of their minds!

Fantastic visuals. I could’ve done without the music and rather hear the sound of the vehicles and the natural sound but it was tolerable.

My grandmother drove this road everyday in a T model ford, she said it was a piece of cake.

I once rode my mobility scooter over this pass. Was annoyed by the number of four wheel drive vehicles getting in the way.

Seeing all those vehicles piled up on the mountain made me think this is the 4WD analogy to Mt. Everest.

Thanks for a great perspective video. I did Black Bear pass on my 650 KLR dual sport motorcycle during a cross country trip. This video really shows how it felt for me. BTW, the motorcycles usually NEED to go faster for control and we always appreciate when the Jeepers let us pass. Also there was a lot of loose rock so careful use of braking was important. I think I would have a serious heart attack in any vehicle on that pass. Wouldn’t mind hiking it though. Beautiful.

If there's a Play Stupid Games - Win Stupid Prizes index. This should be listed somewhere near the top. Even as a pedestrian, this is scary.

This is a very normal road for us, as we live in the North of Pakistan (Chitral).

Right where you were at the start of this video is where, in 1987, my Land Cruiser had a flat tire. That was probably the most interesting tire change I've ever had to do.

Great video. I did Black Bear in a Taco last August (2018). While there are a few technical sections it really isn't that difficult. Mostly just the steps are scary. I feel like you really have to NOT be paying attention or no common sense to have an accident. I think in 2018 they had guy driving drunk and rollover up there. Genius. Fantastic breathtaking views up there.

At 90 years of age and having driven mountain roads for years, nothing in this video makes my ass pucker the seat cover.

I didn't do Black Bear but I did Engineer Pass out of Ouray - loved the abandoned mines and climbing over 3 foot boulders next to sheer cliffs while turning.

My wife and I done Black Bear and Imogene pasees in 2019 while in Colorado for my 50th Birthday. We wereon a 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 and mostly were in 2 wheel drive. Only used 4 wheel when descending steep hills.
