CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Eddie (Paul Newman) stands up to Bert (George C. Scott) after beating Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason) and is banned from stepping into a big time pool hall.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
As The Hustler's "Fast" Eddie Felson, Paul Newman created a classic antihero, charismatic but fundamentally flawed, and nobody's role model. A pool player from Oakland, CA, as good as anyone who ever picked up a cue, Eddie has an Achilles' heel: arrogance. It's not enough for him to win: he must force his opponent to acknowledge his superiority. The movie follows Eddie from his match against billiards champ Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason) as he falls in love with Sarah (Piper Laurie), an alcoholic would-be writer and sometime prostitute, and falls under the spell of Bert Gordon (George C. Scott), a successful gambler who offers to take Eddie under his wing and teach him how to play in the big time. However, when Sarah joins Eddie and Bert on a trip to Louisville for a high-stakes match with a dandy named Findlay (Murray Hamilton), the consequences prove tragic. Along with a classic performance by Newman, The Hustler also features turns by Scott, Laurie, and Gleason, in a rare dramatic role. Cameos from pool champ Willie Mosconi and boxer Jake LaMotta add to the atmosphere of Harry Horner's grubby production design and Eugen Sch

The masterful acting of Gleeson without saying a word.

I love the respect Eddie and Fats show each other at the end. It shows Bert up even more as someone who can't respect anyone or anything.

The fact that he DIDNT win the Oscar for this performance is an absolute outrange. THIS is what an Oscar winning performance looks like

This scene is triumphant for Eddie. Not as a Pool Hustler but as a man.

Now there was a movie. Nothing better than to see great interaction between human beings. No whizz bang effects and unbelievable plot lines. Just raw drama. Simple IS the best!

I love when Fats raises his glass
"So do you, Fast Eddie..."

Newman gave one of the greatest performances of all time

What a cast! Scott's delivery of the line, " You owe me MONEY!! " is gloriously imperative. Gleason personified cool in dress and demeanor. Of course, Newman gave an Oscar performance which he deserved here, not in The Color of Money.

So much great dialogue in this film. From the descriptive Eddie waxing poetic about pool to Burt Gordon's fast talking, sly gangster style vocabulary. Its amazing.

I first watched this movie as a 10 year old as I loved playing pool. I loved it so much I watched it over and over. At 15 I went to the cinema to watch The colour of Money and recall talking to an elderly lady in the queue that said to me ' I hope its as good as the original'..I don't think the lady expected anyone in the cinema queue to have been there because of the Hustler but there I was at 15 telling her " I really hope so too"...A true mater piece of a movie. Paul Newman & Jackie Gleeson both were amazing!

I love the 3/4 (more than half, less than whole) smile Burt gives Eddie as he says “alright”; he is saying Eddie won the moral battle between them, and Eddie gets not just the money, and the moral victory, but some respect and appreciation from Burt. Burt is a wicked, disgusting human being, but the film and George C. Scott show that even the worst people have something in them besides their wickedness and evil. There’s an unmistakable hint of tenderness (including how he gently says “alright”); he’s basically saying “I may be on the more disgusting end of the spectrum, a thug to my core, but I am a human being as are you, and you’ve forced my humanity to acknowledge your humanity, which my position in life normally demands that I suppress. For that achievement, I give you credit... but still I gotta protect what’s mine, so no more big-time pool for you, or you’re dead.”

Having spent hours every day playing snooker in a snooker hall (12 snooker tables and only one 8 ball table) for years as a kid and young man, this brings back great memories. This is and always will be the best pool movie ever.

the cutaways to Fats reaction to Eddie's rant symbolizes that Fats is playing for the Devil but still has a conscious...That is what happened to Fats....He lost his soul to the reluctantly works for the Devil and doesn't want to see Eddie sell his soul to the Devil (Bert) too...That's why Fats gives up!....a truly spiritual movie...Bert tells him to abandon his ways by not ever walking into a pool hall again or he will come under the Devil's domain again...I'm not even religious, but that is the message conveyed in this movie!

All Eddie wanted was respect/acknowledgement from Fats. He finally got it
