CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Eddie (Paul Newman) passionately describes the feeling of playing perfect pool to an enraptured Sarah (Piper Laurie).

FILM DESCRIPTION:
As The Hustler's "Fast" Eddie Felson, Paul Newman created a classic antihero, charismatic but fundamentally flawed, and nobody's role model. A pool player from Oakland, CA, as good as anyone who ever picked up a cue, Eddie has an Achilles' heel: arrogance. It's not enough for him to win: he must force his opponent to acknowledge his superiority. The movie follows Eddie from his match against billiards champ Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason) as he falls in love with Sarah (Piper Laurie), an alcoholic would-be writer and sometime prostitute, and falls under the spell of Bert Gordon (George C. Scott), a successful gambler who offers to take Eddie under his wing and teach him how to play in the big time. However, when Sarah joins Eddie and Bert on a trip to Louisville for a high-stakes match with a dandy named Findlay (Murray Hamilton), the consequences prove tragic. Along with a classic performance by Newman, The Hustler also features turns by Scott, Laurie, and Gleason, in a rare dramatic role. Cameos from pool champ Willie Mosconi and boxer Jake LaMotta add to the atmosphere of Harry Horner's grubby production design and Eugen Sch

One of the best scenes for a young person to watch. You're going to spend a lifetime meeting people who have a shitload more than you have to offer on paper (money, titles, assets, things, friends, etc.) but everyone will respect, admire and envy the person who truly loves and excels at what they do.

Right there is the essence of the movie. The pool game is a metaphor for a man's purpose and making the most of it.

I've watched this movie quite a bit; one of of my faves. I never get over the chemistry shared between Mr. Newman and Miss Lauri. She was sooo good for him.

In addition to the great acting, the incredible characterization and being the essence of the entire film, this scene displays the most accurate description of being in the "Zone" I've ever seen. Anyone who has played a sport or an instrument, did a certain job or any activity over a long period of time has experienced it. When you just stop thinking, your body just goes and everything works. It's like you can see things in slow motion and know what's going happen before it does, and you don't exactly know why. I was fortunate enough to experience this once or twice, but definitely could never describe it as well as Eddy does in this scene.

" Big John ..do you think this boy, is a hustler ? " Jackie Gleason cruised through this brilliant movie ...he was never out of second gear with his acting skills . The Great One was a true American hero genius ..never to be equaled. Different class at everything he touched .

Once in a great while an actor lives and breathes a part so well, it's impossible to think of anyone else in the role. A few examples include Henry Fonda ('The Grapes of Wrath') James Stewart ('It's a Wonderful Life') John Wayne ('Stagecoach') Gloria Swanson ('Sunset Boulevard') and...Mr. Newman as Fast Eddie Felson.

Paul Newman was brilliant in this role. That much is indisputable. Sheer brilliance as Fast Eddie Felson.

But, I love Piper Laurie in this role, too. The character she played in this film understood Fast Eddie Felson better than he understood himself.

This clip is from the 1961 film, "The Hustler, " adapted from the novel written by Walter Tevis. For those who haven't seen the film, the reason Eddie has casts on his hands is because some thugs in a pool hall had broken his thumbs in retaliation for being "hustled" by Eddie who gave himself away when one of his competitors made a remark that provoked Eddie into showing them how great the game of pool actually could be - which was infinitely beyond the egoistic posturings of men who cared much more about how they looked rather than the possibilities for artistry in the game itself, a frame of mind and state of being far beyond their capacity to understand or care about.

Piper Laurie plays the part of Sarah Packard, Eddie's new girlfriend. She is Eddie's intellectual and perceptual superior and Eddie knows it - which is the main reason he loves her. In this scene he is struggling over the fact that an unscrupulous manager has called him a "loser" because of Eddie's love of playing the game of pool being stronger than his focus on winning. Sarah helps Eddie with this by telling him why he is a winner, not a loser.

If you've never seen this film, I highly recommend it. Paul Newman is well-known and highly respected. But, Piper Laurie, in my opinion, was his artistic equal in this film. She was great.
