1918 World War 1 Aircraft Engine made by Curriss. 500 cubic inch with hemispherical heads and a unique push pull camshaft!

500 cubic inches liquid cooled. Really cool engineering on the valvetrain mechanism.

Crazy how this is a 500 cubic inch hemispherical combustion chamber V8. When you compare it to modern top fuel engines that make 12, 000hp with the same cubic inches you gotta admire how far engine technology has come in just 100 years

The OX5 did the job, but it was under-powered at 90 HP for the Curtiss Jenny (which had a lot of drag). OX6 was a little more powerful at 105 HP and had two magnetos for safety purposes, but the Jenny really needed 120 HP and that ended up being provided by the Hispano-Suiza V8 (built on license in America as the Wright-Hisso) which also had an enclosed valve train with direct lubrication. I wonder what Curtiss could have come up with if his team had proper funding in 1914 to develop a better training-aircraft powerplant? Curtiss was a very talented and creative aircraft and engine designer, probably the best American designer at that time.

I'm still not quite understanding why the coolant from the top of the cylinder is piped down through the intake manifold. Was it for carburetor de icing? If so that's pretty clever for the time.

I question if the hose clamps on the prop boss are “aviation standard”?
