For the last 3 years, I went to a dental clinic that assigned you a near dentist level dental hygienist. This year, they got bought out and suddenly I had to have dental work on 16 teeth, when only 6 months ago, I had no dental work (including 10 years back). Dental patients: watch out for changes in ownership in a dental practice and suddenly you need a lot of procedures - get a second opinion!

Dr. Avi, love your content. I think you bring up an important question that needs addressing what's the "return of value" for a dental eduction. Gone are the days of getting your degree and opening your shop to practice for 40 years, and save enough money for a comfortable retirement. (unless you are okay with corporate dentistry infiltration into the profession, and stagnant income growth).
I love your idea of using dentistry as a stepping stone, side hustle, or part time income source, so you can pursue another profitable passion. I believe, if 2-3 day dental providers becomes the "norm" we'll have less burn out of our providers, an improved passion for the profession, and I dare say better outcomes.
I think you are saying, "Think twice about the debt burden of a dental education, if your plan as a dentist is to open/buy an office than work 35-40 hours a week, expecting this profession will provide for you and your family the "doctor lifestyle".
Instead we all need to think about becoming entrepreneur dentists, combining the practice of dentistry with other income producing passions to control one's own destiny?

Dr Avi. Good to hear the facts. I was literally thinking about not pursuing dentistry in USA almost 15 years ago. This is an eye opener.😊 every thing happens for good. Stay blessed

Alternative way to be successful in dentistry: Actually go where you are needed. You don't have to be in the middle of a city fighting to even get 20 new patients a month. There are communities that would love to have you set up shop with them.

One Basic point he missed in this video is that it doesnt matter if you know high end procedures like implants and veneers if you dont know how to relieve a toothache in a compassionate and faithful manner. Thats what earns a patient's trust. If u can do that then patients wud come towards you.

Implants and veneers come much later. Priority is basic restorations, RCTs and Extraction.

I don't believe that any dental school costs $250K/year, much less averages that much.

I think we all can benefit from this information. 🙏🏻 Thank you for sharing. Those dentistry schools sounds like scams! Those students that do the work should be given most of the portion that is paid from people who go there for help due to the fact they have difficulty affording dental care! 😓 I'm glad you have a wife who loves you, pray that God bless you in all you do!!! 🙌🏻🙏🏻❤️✝️🕊️

I regret going to dental school. Graduated with a 3.4/4 gpa and now I’m working minimum wage jobs to pay back my loans. It’s horrible. You can only succeed in this field if you already have a path set for you when you graduate like a clinic ran by your family or if you have the budget to invest into it.

Hey Dr Avi, I really love your videos as they help me understand more about the industry. However, I am not sure if the downsides you explain in your videos also apply to the UK dentistry sector as well or if it's just the USA. Can you please clarify?

Listen closely, he’s telling you that if you don’t have significant financial help from someone else…DON’T GO TO DENTAL SCHOOL! The profession is broken. There are forces at work flooding the market with dentists. The number one donor to my dental school was a dental insurance company. Think about it.

Everything in healthcare is broken. If someone would have just told me it’s more fascinating to learn it than to clock in I would have just hustled doing something else

From your photo, I assume that you graduated from NYU dental school, which is one of the most expensive dental schools in the country. I completed my graduate studies in healthcare policy at NYU and earn $150k/year, but I presently have zero debt (thanks to Public Service Student Loan forgiveness). I think going to the right school is important, but it shouldn't result in a lifetime of student loan payments.

I subscribed to your channel and I watch the "Bentist" channel as well. He's an ortho, who makes really funny content about the importance of maintaining good dental health, while also educating people about ortho treatments.

The dental profession is pretty cooked. Luckily I was on a military scholarship and didn’t accrue any loans from dental school. But now I’m in the service paying back with my time.

Looking at the landscape of dentistry my friends and colleagues from school are dealing with in private/corporate practices sounds awful at times.

Hoping when I exit the service I can pivot into a practice that does things I enjoy in dentistry like sleep dentistry and clear aligners. We will see lord willing!
