New guidelines say that if you're pregnant, you CAN still get dental x-rays. Also, we no longer need to use the lead apron for all patients, regardless of health status.

Or those patients that says no changes to med history but when you update their meds, they are now on blood pressure, cholesterol meds etc 😂

This is why every doctor asks you like 3 times if you’re sure you aren’t pregnant and there’s not a chance. People get so offended when they get asked but like, they’ve gotta ask bc there are absolutely people who don’t think to bring it up or who are like no way I could be pregnant he pulls out 😂 they just have to be safe lol. They have no way of knowing if you’re a virgin or a lesbian etc. They just have to ask.

Me scheduling an MRI: any metal in your body?
Patient: no, just titanium in my knees and shoulders, and a lumbar fusion.

At my dentist they had us fill out a form where you have to indicate if you've ever had those conditions and pregnancy was one of them. I said yes because I'd been pregnant before. For some reason the receptionist was very confused even though the form literally said to indicate if we've "ever" had those conditions and not just if we currently have them. At first she thought I was pregnant, and then when I explained that no, I've BEEN pregnant, she thought I had a baby which I don't because none of my pregnancies have ended in a live birth. I just don't understand why they asked it that way if they didn't want the actual answer.

i think when people hear health history they’re expecting negatives only, and they don’t consider getting pregnant a “health condition” even tho factually that is what it is

Maybe she doesn’t consider pregnancy a “health” issue the way one would consider the flu or a disease?

I updated that I had been diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and maybe a week later had a phone call from the lead dentist (used to be mine but she had to medically retire from practicing so now just runs the dental practice). She called to say she had seen my new diagnosis and let me know that so had she and that’s why she had to stop practicing. She said she had to speak to me because she’s never met another one of us “in the wild”. It’s been great, because she’s no longer my dentist we now have a friendly relationship (she was always so lovely) and can talk about the trials and tribulations of the condition. It also meant she could inform my current dentist that I was likely local anaesthetic resistant so would need extra (she was right, sedation doesn’t work on me either). Instead of 2 shots for my wisdom tooth removal I had 6! Always let them know your changes ❤

This is why I explicitly ask if the patient is pregnant.

Wouldn't have automatically assumed pregnancy was a health history thing. Especially at the dentist. 😮

This is right up there with people claiming to have no medical issues then you ask them what meds they’re on and they take a bunch of stuff

She’s pregnant not unwell due to health issues. She’s pregnant. No sick. It’s good to ask though but I’m with her lol

Growing up, in both Japan and Germany it is normal to fill out a form before any procedures.
People can forget or simply not think of certain things if not asked about it directly and specifically.
I've never had this experience because I'd always be asked to fill out a form where I was asked those important questions on paper before even being led into the doctors office.

They asked “any medical condition” i say “no” and like 3 minutes later y ask “wait is being pregnant a medical condition?” The girls just took the paperwork away and took 30 seconds to respond “yes, pregnancy IS a medical condition” 😬 sorry 😅

I once asked a patient if he has any medical history, he said no. I asked the common ones like hypertension, diabetes. He said "No, i dont have bp or sugar, just had a cardiac surgery last month". I gave the exact reaction

I would probably make that mistake too. I wouldn’t make the connection between pregnancy->health 🤷🏼

I went to a specialist dentist, and the assistant walked me back and stood me in an unfamiliar machine. Didn't realize it was a panoramic x-ray machine until she pulled up the images. I then informed her that I was 2 months pregnant. She went pale and had to go get her supervisor. During the entire thing, she hadn't asked any health questions because I was referred to them with my other main dentist files. I imagine she is much more diligent about it now. Kiddo is healthy and fine today!

to be honest it's easier to ask explicit questions. I found out I was pregnant and then had a dentist appointment a week later at 5 weeks.... it's not something I want to announce to the hygienist at that stage
