In this video, I test out Apples Studio Display 15.5 iOS Beta firmware that you can download with Monterey Mojave 12.3.4 Beta and seeing how much better it is. We also test out the Camo app with my iPhone 13 to see how it works and how good it looks.

I then get into comparing it to the previous LG 5K Ultrafine display 1080P Webcam and the M1 Max 16" MacBook Pro's 1080P Webcam.

In terms of human perception, face and skin tones are most important and the new update makes a much better job of RGB separation than the old one. Old firmware had a green overcast, obviously spilling over R/B channels. I bet if you compare than under a RGBParade, you would still see a lot of confusion over skin and the white portion of the eyes (green cast). New firmware does a much better job if you spot the difference of the white portion of the eyes and the skin, cleaner white.

I get it that human beings do NOT interact anymore and will "visit" each other virtually, but I'd rather use my new monitor for production purposes and not sweat how "perfect" my image looks on Facetime. After-all, I'm no F'n model or anything! (I have a feeling a lot of people are so into themselves, stare in the mirror and will throw a tantrum when their digital image isn't photorealistic). Makes me wonder if we're the same species as we used to be, back before the digital tech obsession became more important than life itself...

i like the colors in the fix more! But using Camo with a fantastic video camera that doesn't do centerstage cropping will always look better! thanks for the recommendation!

I think the fix looks a lot better. I would take it. The camo is very good and just shows you where things can and should get to.

I find it odd that the updated studio display makes your hair and hoodie look exactly like it does on the set of your youtube video (5:25), and yet you say it makes things too dark (5:14)

For the price difference between the lg ultrafine and the studio display. You can get an insta360 link, a 4k webcam with a 1/2" inch sensor (great low light performance) and it has something way better then center stage. The actual camera sits on top of a small gimbal and can rotate 360 degrees to follow you anywhere in the room.

In my opinion, the new firmware on controlled lighting is much better than the old one.

For me is the camera inthe Studio display OK. For online meetings like Zoom, Facetime etc. it is not that bad.

No matter the results, Apple not laying the groundwork for Camo to work properly with their first-party apps has got to be the laziest, most anti-competitive and obtuse stance yet (the security argument doesn’t even stick, as you’re more likely to buy a compromised piece of hardware than getting hacked through Camo). I’ve been happily using Camo on my old 2017 5K iMac, with all apps which do support it, and have since switched temporarily to an M1 Mac mini and now permanently to a Mac Studio, which makes it an actual necessity. With both my old iPhone 11 and my current iPhone 13 mini, it’s always been as great as Max demonstrated, especially when compared to that iMac’s old webcam.

I’ll skip the Studio Display, likely for good (because no matter how Mac-friendly it may be, it’s a single-input deal which would make working with a multi-device setup an absolute nightmare), but the fact that I may ultimately cave in and buy an expensive webcam for my infrequent video calls irks me to no end.

To my eyes, I like the camera fix colors better, too. And on my Mini LED TV, the fancy studio camera produces an image just as dark and contrasty as the built-in camera after the fix. The Camo software looks good too, but I would be happy with the picture after the fix.

The best stand for your phone, using Camo, is a Starbucks coffee cup with a small space cut out for the phone to sit in.

This is only Apple's first minor firmware update for the Studio Display webcam. 
So there are still several firmware updates.
