For 42 years, a team of college all-stars would play the defending super bowl champions. It was quite the spectacle when it began, reaching crowds larger than 100,000. However, it would end on a disastrous note.

Imagine having a psychology exam the same day you have to play The steel curtain.

Honestly, besides the risk of injury, a college all-star team playing a random team that finished in the bottom half of the league would be great to watch

When I was much younger I used to think that college teams were “lesser” teams of the nfl. So in my mind I thought that if they got better, then they would develop into nfl teams, if I worded that first sentence correctly. Like it was some leveling-up system. I always asked my dad when lsu would play against the saints and he kept saying that they’re in different leagues and I just didn’t understand what that meant

They should do this again, pitting the worst NFL team of the season against the NCAA national champion. Even if it only happened once, the amount of money made from advertising would be simply astronomical.

The game wouldn't even be fun nowadays. It'd be a blowout by the end of the 2nd quarter, especially if the defending champs were serious about the game

At 63, I'm old enough to remember the College All-Star Game. I have a few items to add to your wonderful video: 1) Soldier Field did not become the home of the Bears until 1971 (prior to that, they played at Wrigley Field); 2) by the 1970's, most of the All-Stars had already been drafted by NFL teams, who had to excuse these top-rated rookies from training camp to participate in this game (a major factor in the NFL's decision to end the annual contest); 3) the 1974 game was cancelled due to an NFLPA strike - another body blow to the game; 4) the proceeds for the game went to Chicago Tribune Charities (Arch Ward was that paper's sport editor); and 5) the College All-Star Game was not Ward's only promotion; the year before he organized baseball's first All-Star Game at Comiskey Park - an event which endures to this day.

An interesting note is that the Bears were still playing their home games at Wrigley Field during this era. Wrigley had no lights, which is why this game, always played at night, was played at Soldier Field. But Soldier Field didn’t have quite enough light for color transmission, which is why all the highlights are in b&w, bc that’s how the game was televised.

It’s like when the 5th graders play the 6th graders during lunch in elementary school and the 5th graders get beat up

I remember telling my dad once they should let the college National Champion play the last-place team in the NFL. Apart from no franchise wanting to be associated with losing to kids if it happened (unlikely), he pointed out that the worst NFL team is still made up of top-calibre college recruits and should be able to crush even a NC.

(Plus, no one wants to own a career-ending injury of a 20-yr-old.)

who said "people don't understand how good you have to be to be bad in the nfl"?

Imagine a #1 draft pick getting his knee blown out in a game like this.

My grandfather (all-American from Notre dame) played in the ‘37 game (the program to the game is shown). His team was the first to win 6-0 against the packers. I’ve got his uniform from the game, interestingly stripes were along the backsides of the legs instead of down the sides.

This story reminds me of the Pottsville Maroons. They were an NFL team back in the 1920s who beat Notre Dame (back when College football was king over Pro) and that win cost them the NFL title that year for playing an unsanctioned game.

Every so often a vote comes up to give them the title back. To this day they still haven't gotten it back, but the Legend lives on in my hometown area.
