The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occurred on January 28, 1986, when NASA's STS-51-L mission ended in tragedy just 73 seconds after liftoff. The shuttle broke apart due to the failure of an O-ring seal in its right solid rocket booster, caused by unusually cold weather on the morning of the launch. The faulty seal allowed hot gases to escape, leading to the destruction of the external fuel tank and the disintegration of the orbiter.

All seven crew members, including Christa McAuliffe, a teacher selected to be the first civilian in space, lost their lives. The disaster shocked the world and led to a temporary suspension of the Space Shuttle program. It prompted a thorough investigation, resulting in significant changes to NASA’s safety protocols and organizational structure.

Things can change in a second. Dont be uncomfortable to give a hug. Its important to reach out and touch somebody's hand.

I was a senior in high school and our English teacher wheeled in a TV on a cart. She said "Forget the lesson plan! This is history. Watch!" God rest her soul.

Советским школьником видел эту трагедию по телевизору в программе время. Нам учительница сказала, что женщина астронавт НАСА должна была урок географии из космоса провести. Погибшие покорители космоса навсегда в наших сердцах и неважно какая это страна.

I was 10 and remember this more vividly than anything else from that time. It still makes my eyes tear up and my stomach still hurts the same.

I was in grade school when this happened. The nun disliked me so much I wasn’t allowed in the same room as the rest of the kids to watch the shuttle launch. All I remember was hearing a full room of people gasp through the walls.

I remember all of my coworkers gathered in the conference room to watch. When the shuttle exploded everyone gasped and then for about a minute you could hear a pin drop. It’s burned into my memory. 😢
