Is Zoom Spying on You?

How private is Zoom, really?
For years, Zoom claimed to have end-to-end encryption for all its calls, which means that users can communicate securely with each other, and no one else -- not even Zoom -- can access the call.
It turns out this wasn't true, and yesterday the FTC reached a settlement with Zoom about its misleading language.

Even though Zoom now actually IS rolling out e2eE for its users, is it a platform we can really trust? And how do the alternatives compare?

Lightening to ethernet adapter:

Faraday bag wallet (signal stopping, to protect your fob, credit card, and phone)

Data Blocker (if you're charging your phone in an unknown port, use this so that no data is transferred)

Computer privacy screen (use your computer in public? Keep your information safe!)

Phone privacy screen (don't let people in public see your private data)

Camera cover (for computers and phones, so no one can access your camera without you knowing)

Privacy Tip: Don't use wifi, and if you must, append the tag ‘_nomap’ or ‘_optout’ to your SSID to stop other websites tracking your location.

Naomi is basically the kind of woman Ayn Rand envisioned. She's completely amazing.

Lots of Chinese influence going on for sure. Think I'm going to stop using Zoom for awhile. Love and thankfulness always for your reports Naomi. 🤜🤛

I would be astonished if it isn’t. E2E encryption is largely a mirage to lull people into a false sense of security. I say ‘largely’ because if one manages their own encryption they can at least make eavesdropping a pita.

Thank you Naomi. I couldn't help thinking that it's already shocking to be this far into the 21st century and that encryption is still an after-thought.

That's the last time I do any of my conferencing in the shower, let alone the loo.

Excellent Job! What is needed is public source code review and user configurable and controllable encryption. Tor Zoom;)

I too like to close the door as well when I use the bathroom even though I live by myself, plus I don't like my cat staring at me as I go.

Zoom has never been private. You should really look at being online as your home. Do you leave your doors and windows open at night when you go to bed or do you close and lock them and have a shot gun next to your bed. I'd rather be the guy with the shot gun. To do this you must use the latest antivirus, use safe browsers, use safer search engines, use vpn outside of the 14 eyes for starters and never download anything from government like track and trace apps onto your phone.

I can imagine that Zoom might have been spying in order to "improve the platform" if they were using big data and analytics to scan for keywords like "Wait sorry, what Naomi? You're breaking up, I can't hear you" and then sending the call data to the tech team to "iron out the bugs"
In any case, completely dodgy.

I kind of like how the EU tends to slap multibillion fines for stuff like this. And they are jsut gonna get harder on issues such as these.

As a FW engineer and Checkpoint specialist, I some times have remote sessions with CP on difficult issues. They used to used Logmein123 but switched to Zoom some time ago. My sessions with them are now very short.

I installed a Jitsi server. Works great and is open source. ZERO interest in zoom. One coverup cannot be overcome for me.

I would be disappointed if they don't.

Is Zoom's e2ee actually available for use within Australia?
If so, is it because the Australian government has required them to provide another way to access communications, effectively making encryption meaningless?
And what about Jitsi Meet in Australia?

Fascinating that Zoom was ready just in time for the nCoV2019 pandemic and over-reactions.

Keybase and Signal have reasonably good reputations for encryption. Meanwhile if you rely on software for privacy, do look at the code. And don't risk your freedom on what you don't understand.
