That's why I hard wired my home security system. I just feel old school is sometimes better.

That's why my cameras are hardwired with a dvr

@Liron, your videos are great. Education is important and security is complex. The low end systems target people who don't have a technical background and you make it easy for people to understand. Your contribution is excellent and much needed.

For those who can only use WiFi cameras and can't hardwire it.. I suggest getting cameras where you can store footage on a local MICRO SD card. It's the very last resort of having some video recording unless someone rips off the camera from your wall. Get the highest Micro SD card capacity the camera allows so you can save as much footage as possible even if the wifi is down. But if you have a power outage, that's another issue. Those hip trendy cameras seem to only save video to the cloud and that requires Wifi, let alone a friggin subscription. Get one that has a Sd slot!

45 years in security and I will NEVER recommend wireless cameras of any type except for portable point observations. Hardwire with backup, out of sight out of mind. Covert is better and tell the customers as little as possible about the technical side. The less they know the less they can tell.

Funny. My security cameras have a bright red LED that comes on when they d/c from the network. I always thought that was a dumb idea and now I see I was right. It's a confirmation LED for a thief.

I read a post a week ago asking how thieves had broken into his friends house and the wifi cameras stopped recording just before it happened. I don't know if the power was turned off or this attack was responsible, now I'm thinking the latter.

All my cameras are hardwired to a POE switch. Switch hardwired to the router. Then my DVR has a hardwire direct to the router. Top security and minimal lag.

This is why you choose cameras with internal sd-card adapter and keep recording offline no matter the NVR, WiFi, cloud or phone application status.
It only costs 15$-20$ more for each sd-card but as a backup recorder its absolutely worth it!
Even if they stole the local NVR device, you can still download the footage straight from the cameras! 😉

That’s you!! My cameras record locally to SD, and the cloud…PLUS, I just checked my router and it supports WPA3!! Changing immediately!

I'm glad my cameras continue recording, even after going offline(local storage)

I literally watched the surveillance video of a guy with no face coverings of any kind just walk up to my bike which was locked to a bike rack at a public transit station in the middle of a large city, pick up my bike, twist it around, and pop the lock off and walk away with my bike. The transit cop showed me the video, and told me flat out that there was no way they would ever find my bike or the guy that stole it. Security cameras are useless. They don’t stop people from committing crimes, and they rarely help you catch someone who commits a crime against you.

Thanks, switched over to WPA3 for the wifi cams. Multi-layered security is best practice, if one fails or is defeated the backup is there.

I don’t understand why night vision camera manufacturers use 850nm infrared lights instead of 940nm. 940nm LEDs are a lot less visible to the human eye than 850nm. It makes it harder to spot your cameras at night unless they have night vision optics.

You are so kind to let people know this. I know an evil woman who said she has a spare master key and can get into any apartment. People can steal from you. Do not keep cash in the home. These theives know where you keep things. They befriend you and ask all sorts of questions once they get your trust. They betray you without remorse and steal.

2.4ghz is cheaper, but also has much better range than 5ghz. Smart cameras use it because they're typically further from access points than other devices.

This attack, along with jammers are two reasons I always insisted on old-fashioned ethernet for my security system. With POe connected to UPS, nothing will get missed.

Cell phone jammer existed 15 years ago. Was pretty cool to turn it on and have all the zone go dead.

"what's scary" is that people think Wifi is robust enough for a security system. Wifi is EASILY interfered with, this single proof-of-concept is just the latest of the ways to handle it. If you have a camera, and you want it to be more than decoration, then wire it in. Unfortunately I also understand how hard it is to wire in many of the cameras, in placed like apartments, for the places that HAVE to have wireless, it HAS to have local storage, or back to decoration status.

it's not crazy if you are sick of being recorded everywhere you go
