I wanted to make my dad something cool for Christmas. This is what I came up with. The whole grill was basically made from stuff I had laying around (minus a couple little things).

Lid Support Hinges:

Door Hinges:

Nice work but it and your design could have definitely been better. I only say this because I grill A LOT and I also own a machine shop. The things I am talking about would not have cost you any money as you seem to have lots of material laying about. First, there should have been a sealing flange welded onto the door so that when closed there is no obvious gap between the door and the body of the grill. Second, after a couple of cooking sessions that expanded steel charcoal grate will bend and settle to the point where it will probably come off of the brackets so a couple of full cross supports are needed there. Third, where is your air control? In order to control the burn rate of the charcoal and even to get the charcoal lit with your ingenious use of gas grill parts you need to have air flow. Fourth, off of the 2" bung opening you need to put a bit of a smoke stack just to funnel the grill smoke away from the top of the grill. Please don't take these things to be too critical because I don't even know if you have any experience on using, let alone building, a grill so consider this sage advice from someone who has been grilling and smoking for over 35 years.

If you've read this far and I haven't pissed you off to the point where you just stopped reading, I have to say this; Your father should be proud of you, you not only have the skill and ingenuity to make things but you have the heart to use those traits for the benefit of your family members and those kind of gifts are always, always, always, the ones that will be remembered rather than a store bought gift.

It looks like the 1" bunghole already in the drum could've been used for the gas assist starter. Looks good.

Great job! I didn’t see the barrel being cured or burned out to get rid of the petroleum residue.

Hi there, amazing job. One question if you don't mind. The lid support hinge have some plastic inside, Obviously the plastic might melt. I couldn't find one type made just from metal. Tried your link.
What's your view on this?

Thanks

Hey what about air vents? Do we need those to regulate the air we want inside? Also what about a chimney?
Amazing work done 👍🏻

Bro, luv d video. Got a question, u burn off the residue before u painted it? Second, why you paint the inside? I'm not critical but the I'm more confused?🤔 What are the dimensions for the legs n wheels? I would like to know.

Second layer where the charcoal is going to sit on, charcoal is going to eat thru that In a jiffy. First layer is good for now, my opinion.
