Should Mongolia have arrested Putin?

Should Mongolia have arrested Vladimir Putin? In early September the Russian president received a warm welcome as he paid his first official visit to the country. However, many believed he should have been arrested for war crimes. But Mongolia is in a very difficult geopolitical position.

Mongolia (unlike South Africa, which is basically on the other side of the world) shares a huge land border with Russia. So arresting Putin would have 100% meant facing a full-scale Russian invasion.

Yeah, we should apologize for being so very much selfish and not wanting to become a Russian province.

international law doesn't mean shit anymore. It hasn't for years, but the past few years made it easier to just ignore it. Countries will always put their interests first, Mongolia is no different.

ICC is not an impartial / neutral institution. I will have more respect for the ICC if they issue an arrest warrant for Netanyahu and some leaders in the West.

They shouldn't have invited him in the first place. If they wanted to make necessary deals with one of their two neigbours, they should have invited another Russian official. The fact they invited Putin himself tells us they knew it would be controvesrial and didn't care.

I think they should be disciplined for this.

There is such a thing as diplomatic immunity for serving statesmen from ambassadors to presidents.
Theres the what about isms like why wasnt tony blair arrested? Henry kissinger? And the list is endless
When all is said and done Realpolitik kicks in and self interests and self preservation takes center stage.

Many more before him. Or the ICC has just become another instrument of hegemonic dominance?

Internacional law is not a shirt that you' put on and off, when is convinient, and the west it's been doing just that for too long🤔🤣

From time immemorial, cardinal rule of diplomacy was to release unharmed visitors you called in first place. So if Mongolia even contemplated arrest, they should have told Putin not to come. But could Mongolia afford that? Not really, not any more then Serbia is able to show middle finger to West, which they do not dare to do.

Morally yes.
Legally it's probably pretty complicated, and within a clear and exact same precedent, the likelihood is that a Mongolian court would release him within a few days, pending an ICJ ruling on the difference between Putin as president or individual.
This would take years and is likely a road that the ICJ won't ever go down.

No . They are not in a position to do so . Peace Always .

Morally and legally yes.. Perhaps they could have required him to stay in house arrest till he could return to Russia so icj could then decide further actions if required. Very difficult situation for Mongolia. Have to wonder why they asked him to visit?

Should all US and UK state representatives have been arrested for crimes against humanity committed in Yugoslavia and the Middle East in the 90s? Therefore, law and justice must apply equally to everyone.

of course they should; international agreement is a source of international law; therefore, the sovereignty of Mongolia is disputed from now on

Can’t really blame em. Mongolia is a land lock country between russia and china they have no sea access. Mongolia land is arid and flat making cultivation impossible. Since its land lock two major trading partners of Mongolia is russia and china again…………wouldn’t be wise to bite the hand that feeds you

Well the obvious answer with any sort of prevailing common sense is no - no matter your stance on the war in Ukraine.

Lock him up like Richard the Lionheart? I don't think arresting heads of state is in line with diplomacy as a whole

Mongolia is literally surrounded by two world powers sharing common vested interests with each other. There is little the United States, South Korea, or Japan could do to offset let alone mitigate any retaliatory reaction from Moscow or Beijing without risking world war. For example, how could the United States bolster Mongolian defenses without violating Russian or Chinese airspace simultaneously considering any show of military support could be seen as an act of war?

It can be argued the edification of the Sino-Soviet split occurred on Mongolia's doorstep in 1969 when the former Soviet Union & Maoist China fought a protracted border war against each other as Mongolia observed with great anxiety. This cannot be mentioned without calling attention to the fact that Mongolia has traditionally been geopolitically aligned with Russia against China since the early twentieth century.

Additionally, Russia's cultural influences on Mongolia are further evidenced with the latter adopting cyrillic cementing a historical attachment to Moscow.

These aforementioned realities make any game changing break with Moscow or Beijing highly unlikely.
