I’ve served as an indirect fire infantrymen for 22 years active duty, and another 10 years as a training specialist for PM Morters, and seven years as an instructor at the United States Army infantry school Fort Benning, Georgia, Fort Moore. This method is called: Riding the base plate. It’s done when the ground below the base plate is hard and compacted, to ensure proper seeding for firing.

This is called "riding the baseplate". It's done to seat or sink the baseplate into hard compacted ground. Making sure the baseplate is fully seated prevents the morter blast from throwing the cannon (tube) backwards.

Кто стрелял из миномета все поймет. А так, много чего зависит от грунта. При отдачи выстрела из миномета фиксация очень важна.

As an FO I've learned to disregard the location of that first round for adjustment or registration purposes. "First round obseved safe. Repeat, over."

It’s to settle the baseplate to give it a stable firing base. If your on rocky ground you can use sandbags under the baseplate for the same effect.

"Hey, we need a 100-150 lb weight to put on the base of the mortars, any ideas on a easily portable weight?"

Physics at work. For every force, there is a counter force. Personally, I always liked firing the 81mm mortar. The ability to actually watch the round going down range to the point of impact is amazing. You see the blast before you hear it.

It's called " setting the base plate." That's a 60mm mortar, and setting the base plate makes future mortar launches much more stable and accurate. In the Marines, I was a 2171, a missile/optics/laser tech. That quadrant sight, and other optics, was my primary job in the Marines. I've done many training ops with mortar teams, and we did this all the time for the first mortar rounds down range before we went with the accurate rounds. Good times! 😂😂

As the baseplate in beaded itself into the ground the guy standing on it kept it from bouncing of which they have a tendency to do God Bless the Plumbers of the U.S Military

Because the Gun Base is not Fixed to a permanent Footing, each time the motar is fired, it changes the angle of the Guns position. Two inches in the angel of the Gun base can change the angle of the motar impact location from 200 to 500 feet on impact more or less.

As far as I know, it's called somewhat like _riding the mortar_ and it's actually not allowed in many armies as there is absolutely no necessity for it and is nothing else than a army man doing dumb sh**

In the British Army, the no1 and no2 both put a foot on the baseplate to help it he'd in. The purpose is to prevent the baseplate from bouncing when the ground is hard.
