As a mortarman, I can tell you a couple things.

These things are (obviously) in accurate as shit. Mortars are an “area” weapons system only to a point, like a hand grenade. It still has to be with in a fairly small distance of the target to be effective.

They aren’t shooting far. Using a tube with no baseplate like that will severely limit the range of the rounds. Just like any other munition the higher pressure rounds need the baseplate and a bipod to keep the cannon from sinking a foot into the ground every shot. Plus you can break your hands even using a 60mm past charge 1-2. If the base of this thing hits a rock it’s just going to damage the cannon over time aswell.

I’ve seen a 120 break it’s baseplate hitting a rock, sure it’s a bigger gun but the baseplate weighs 136lbs alone and it broke.

Those mortar rounds hit exactly where the pre-buried charges were! Excellent accuracy

Highly encourage the PLA to continue doing what they’re doing. Aim wildly.

The US M224 60mm mortar is designed so it can be fired something like this... the main difference being that there is a smaller baseplate used when in hand-held mode. The M224 even has a trigger firing mechanism for this mode, and (if I recall correctly) a bubble angle gauge for rough range estimation. Alternatively it can be set up with a larger baseplate and a bipod and conventional sight, and drop-fired.

What you missed, after firing he then turned around and broke 10pcs of wood with his hand and 15 bricks with his head Kung Fu style. The PLA really knows what they're doing.

Those mortars still have the ball on the bottom and the locking ring around the tube. They are probably demonstrating a hasty fire ability. I doubt the are as accurate as shown. The US 60mm has a handle with a built in bubble level with range markings. For hasty fire you get a smaller rectangle base plate, hold the handle (that has the level and built in trigger), put your other hand towards the top of the tube and use your thumb like a front sight post. That is rather accurate if you're good at judging range.

I did Mortas for 15y in an Army, and I can say it's absolutely impossible to hit targets like this.

Probably more accurate than the sideways bullets from the other training video.
However on a serious note, i've seen the older version a lot, where they fire 107mm rockets from earth mounds, using simple rulers to aim them. Allegedly China loves to portray itself as the underdog who will be victorious through brutal sacrifice, so it makes sense they would show how their fearless warriors can fight even if they lose everything else but the mortar tube.

You could easily train troops to make adjustments by eye ... if each troop has 2, 000 practice rounds and weeks in which to practice each year.

you should never question the credibility of Chinese military videos, especially those definitely not cardboard and plastic body armor.... their reputation for honesty is impeccable.

I like how the tube buries itself a couple inches deeper into the ground with every shot.

Also, there's a reason that well trained mortar teams turn and duck when they fire. You can easily have a catastrophic failure where either the tube ruptures or the mortar round can actually detonat in the tube. Just standing in front of it like they're doing would definitely blow their face off if either occurs
