NEW iPads... and some things Apple didn't mention

Apple has released a new 11" and 13" iPad Air with M2... and new 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models with the all-new M4 chip and a super bright Tandem OLED display! There's a new "Pencil Pro", a Magic Keyboard with function keys (for some), and some good news on pricing (along with the inevitable increases)... and there are one or two things Apple glossed over or didn't mention...

A FEW UPDATES
I had assumed the Magic Keyboard would work with either Air or Pro... which was a silly assumption given the thickness difference. We realised the keyboards were different when we spotted that the function keys are only on the Pro keyboard, but we should have fixed the segment before editing. 🤦🏼‍♂ Sorry, and thanks to everyone who corrected me.

Something else to confirm is that the new iPad Air and iPad Pro only support Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil USB-C. They won't support Apple Pencil 2nd generation. This is due to a change in position of the wireless charging and magnets to accommodate the landscape camera.

I didn't discuss the AI performance of the M4 in this video, because I wanted to do some more research. Apple quoted 38 trillion operations per second (38 TOPS) for the Neural Engine in M4... and they quoted 18 TOPS for M3. That seems like a massive uplift, except that the M4 number is based on INT8 and the M3 number is based on FP16. The actual uplift is more like 5-10% based on information I've seen so far, but we need to see more testing.

Finally, some Geekbench 6 results have been leaked since publishing, and the M4 does look like a healthy step up on M3, though some of that will be due to additional cores. I'll reserve judgement until it's been properly tested, but it's good news for when we get to see these chips in the Mac - perhaps as soon as WWDC!

Thanks for all the comments and support. 😊

Still rocking my 2018 iPad Pro with the A12x chip. It rarely feels slow and has great features like promotion and quad speakers—something that isn’t even on the latest iPad Air!

I ordered a new 13" iPad Pro and was going to choose nano-texture glass, but then I viewed a review video on Apple Studio monitor which offers the same nano-texture glass. The person said they regret getting the nano-texture because text does not appear as crisp and high resolution as with standard glass. He showed a close up of the blurry, scattered looking text on the nano-texture glass. I am wondering whether the new iPad Pro has this exact same nano-texture glass as on the Studio monitor. Anyway, I changed my order to 'standard glass' because I do a lot of reading on my iPad Pro and crisp clear text is super important. I hope that reviewers will show a close up side-by-side with text on the new OLED screens with both types of glass, and also show both OLED iPads next to the previous iPad Pro mini LED screens for comparison. That would be interesting to see.

Just to let you know the new Magic Keyboard is only compatible with iPad Pro not the iPad Air, you haft to get the old design for the air.

To justify the price of the 13’, Apple could have added a second port and dual boot with MacOS.

Ordered my 13" iPad Pro, keyboard and pro pencil and I get it next week on the 15th. Based on how I plan on using it I do not think I am going to miss the top spec and went with 256 and did not want the nano glass. I want a brighter screen. Still can't believe I spent $2k on that setup.

The iPad is a frustrating device. As a software developer, I struggle to take advantage of the power of my M1 iPad Pro. It seems the iPad Pro is really only for those working in video production because I can't see who else would benefit from the M4.

I plan on upgrading my 2020 IPad Air. Debating between the 2022 IPad Pro that I can buy at base exchange for $ 599 or new Air for $ 599. I don’t play games or watch movies. I’m retired and watch You Tube hours at a time and spend about 5 hours a day on it.

I watched this video using the First Gen iPad Pro 12.9. My ipads are just media consumption machines and I see no point upgrading to M4 since Netflix, Youtube all run just fine at 1080p streaming. The experience is still miles better than Fire or Android devices that I've tried. It's a bit old in the tooth now and cannot get the latest iPad OS but still works surprisingly well!

The M3 Max does not have the ultra fusion part, which may imply that the M3 Ultra will not arrive. I guess M4 Ultra will be the star of the show of WWDC

The laminated screen on the Air/Pro is better for digital artists using the pencil than the iPad 10’s glass-covered screen. If you aren’t doing art, the 10 is perfectly fine. Seems they’ve targeted the more premium iPad’s at a very niche market, which is an interesting sales choice!

I think you're forgetting about gaming on the iPad. Death Stranding, Resident Evil 4, and Resident Evil Village all push the M2 iPad Pro to it's performance limit, and seeing that the M4 has 4x the GPU performance, that is going to make a huge difference. With Assassin's Creed Mirage expected to release around the same time as WWDC I expect them to showcase this.

One observation I've seen on some hardware-oriented channels is that the M4 uses a newer and less-expensive manufacturing process than the M3 did. And when it's running, it will use less power than the M3. I believe they did not increase how long a full-charge will last, so it's more likely that they reduced the size of the battery and stayed with the length from battery charge. They certainly couldn't release this new iPad Pro with the *M2* chip, and given the benefits of going with the M4 over the M3 I was pretty confident that they'd go with the M4.

The lineup seems very straightforward
- I want a small one (mini)
- I want a cheap one (iPad 10)
- I want a regular one (iPad Air)
- I want OLED (iPad Pro)

M4 is looking to be very good. Single Core on my M3 Pro is 3051, whereas M4 is scoring 3767 with Geekbench 6. The Multicore score I get for 12 cores on M3 Pro is 14766, whereas 10 core M4 seems to be scoring 14677, which seems to indicate there should be an improvement once we get M4 Pro/Max/Ultra. It more excites me for the M4 Mac mini or Mac Studio. Incredible stuff!

I feel like this event was almost targeting digital artists.

Going to wait to actually see one in a store, but want to upgrade my iPad Pro 10.5 to between iPad Pro 256 11” or the air with same storage. I can hold my current iPad laying on the bed with one hand not sure if I could with the 13”

Ordered the iPad Pro 512 13 inch to upgrade original iPad Pro. Ordered magic keyboard and new pencil, especially now pencil had find it functionality. It will be interesting to see what apple brings out in June to utilise the iPad Pros spec’s, hoping we see a true contest for surface pro.

I have 2018 pro. I was quite excited to upgrade. Not anymore. Maybe depend on next month whether I buy it.
