All these ancient republics were so much about checks and balances - "designers" clearly valued stability above all. I guess it means that they were able to survive through some chaos and wanted to never see it again.

I find it interesting that the elections for office, for putting people into positions, tended to favor the wealthy or powerful, but the votes on law were basically a democratic referendum. The people don't write the laws, but the senate can't actually enact them itself, it pretty much always went through the plebeian assembly. Just like modern referenda, they couldn't amend the bill once it had reached them, but they could keep tossing it back until they were happy with it or the senate got fed up enough to put it to the tribal assembly. Which was apparently rare. Not to mention that the tribune of the plebs was one of the handful of political offices with complete veto power, and vetoes weren't restricted to laws, they could pretty much veto any political action, even speeches.

8:04 Kinda reminds me of how the US Presidential election works. People vote within their states, and then those states "vote" for whoever the majority of their voters voted for.
