I believe it has a 15 meter limited range so surveyors may be disappointed at the current limits. What I want to see is whether it can accurately scan a kitchen. The difference for custom kitchen cabinets made entirely on a large CNC would revolutionize the industry. They could scan, leave, and come back with perfectly fitting cabinets that contour around every bulge in the plaster or out of plumb wall.

To a guy who has been working with LiDAR for 20+ years, this is very exciting news.

I guess there wasn't a lot of information out there when this video was made. I recently got an M1 iPad and have been playing with the the Polycam app to create 3D models with the Lidar sensor and from my research it seems that the lidar sensor in the iPad is too basic to create clear 3D models of small objects so unless there is some clever work around for that I don't think you’ll be scanning the various items on your desk.
It's the kind of thing that needs to be included now so that people can start developing ideas to use it for and that will drive the technology to become more refined in coming years. As it is, reducing the size and cost of the the lidar sensor to put it in an iPad is amazing. Exciting stuff both in spite of it's limitations and because of how much room for rapid improvement there is.

Actually this is so useful for the AEC industry, point cloud technology is one of the trends for the coming years and i am so excited that apple include this type of sensors in their products. Definitely, the ideal tablet for construction industry (especially in site)

Two years later, this is improving really well. Polycam can now scan entire rooms in full colour and detail

This is going to be great for the work I do - surveying old barns and archaeological remains!

This feature has so many applications in technical fields. Sadlly, for students, gamers etc, it will be a gimmick. Professional Lidar equipment is expensive, this is a game changer for close-up lidar.

This is actually really exciting. When used for creating reference images for Archviz projects. This could be a game changer.

I’m interested in this for law enforcement and natural resource work, I.e. mapping crime scenes, vehicle accidents, archeological sites, etc.. Could turn out to be very useful.
