In the past decade or two, there has been an upsurge of interest in Maya history. This was partly fueled by the mythical Maya prediction of the end of the world in 2012, which for a short period of time put this civilization under the media spotlight.
But there is much more to their culture than the common misconception about their calendar.
You see, this is one of the most important and most influential civilizations of the whole Mesoamerican region. The Mayans did not only make achievements in the field of astronomy; they also made revolutionary accomplishments in agriculture, engineering and communications.

They’re still in Guatemala. People say they just disappeared but that’s not true. They wouldn’t still be speaking Mayan languages if they disappeared.

While I think a lot of cultures had/have twisted morals and other disagreeable things, I am infinitely fascinated with them! The Mayans being one of the most fascinating to me; something about their architecture, art, and general culture piques my interest. Thanks for always have such thoroughly informational content, your voice and the visuals really are captivating!

Edit: I'd just like to add that I am a Christian, and I am disgusted by the missionaries who destroy history and force our religion to those who reject it. :"( That is not the teaching of Christ.

There were many types of sacrifice, heart extraction was used to specific purposes. Beheading and evisceration were also common.

We’re still here. Most of us that are “obviously” Maya (still culturally and semi-traditionally Maya) are in Guatemala and surrounding areas, but we’re literally all over the states as well. History is a crazy thing.

Having the privilege to visit almost all of them with taking credit out of any of this ruins but Guatemala 🇬🇹 is truly on another level when it comes to mayan ruins, culture and history almost all the most important aspects of this civilization are here. If you want visit this ruin I will the Guatemalan for last because they are truly the most impressive. It's like this go Disneyland first then Disney world and not the other one around or you'll be disappointed.

They're still around and they look like the Mayans at Bonampak. They just got re-classified by the products of the Spanish Moors (the guys who Columbus chose to show him how to get to Amaru-ka in the first place)...

13 million people speak one of the maya languages today. The fall is more like a peak where outside forces from the north destroyed the trade network that made the bigger maya cities pretty useless after they were raided. Why rebuild? And when they did build new cities, they were more defensible and smaller. In Mexico in the yucatan, the itza and yucatec are a pretty quite people but some of the other tribes of the 26 that make up the maya in like Chiapas are more friendly. Palenque and San cristabol de la casas are extremely native American and my Spanish was useless some times as they spoke maya.

It's a good thing that these structures are outside of the U.S.! Otherwise Left-Wing Karens would study the culture, ..and if they found one disagreeable practice they would demand that all symbolism representing this culture be destroyed!

Common belief is the Spanish wiped them out. However, many of them moved northward. What is puzzling is the pyramids. The etchings show that something from the stars visited them. The same etchings on the walls of pyramids on the other side of the world. They didn't know about each other so there may be some truth to something came from the stars.
