. An embolism is the lodging of an embolus, a blockage-causing piece of material, inside a blood vessel.
Pulmonary embolism is a blockage in one of the pulmonary arteries in the lungs. The pulmonary emboli result from thrombus or blood clot, amniotic fluid, fat, and air.

In regards to timing, we can have acute, subacute, and chronic emboli.
When discussing the anatomy of pulmonary emboli, we talk about where the clot lodges. It can be saddle, segmental, and sub-segmental emboli.
Hemodynamics show stable or unstable pulmonary emboli.
Unstable pulmonary emboli are also called massive or high-risk pulmonary emboli.
Stable emboli are at intermediate risk.
Unstable emboli are more dangerous for patients.
The symptoms of pulmonary emboli include dyspnea, pleuritic chest pain, hemoptysis, wheezing, calf pain, orthopnea, and cough.
