Why the iPad Pro 2018 is better than a M1 iPad Pro in 2021

A quick video about why I think the M1 iPad Pro is just not worth it and why a 2018 or 2020 iPad Pro may be a better purchase decision.

Huge props to @Thetechchap and @MaxTechOfficial who have done the hard yards and tested the M1 iPad Pro in real world comparisons. Videos are linked here:

Summary: The amazing performance upgrade is definitely there without a doubt, but the limitation of ipad OS, expandability, and the nature of the device makes it virtually impossible to take advantage of it. Furthermore, the nearly 4 years old a12x is still wayyy more than enough for 99% of the tasks done on iPads. :)

You’ve nailed it. I’ll be holding on to my very capable 2018 iPad Pro for a little while yet

As someone who has had the 2018 11 inch iPad Pro since launch, I too think I’m going to keep mine. I took mine to the apple store to compare it to the new M1 iPad pros and they felt almost the same performance wise.

Every time I think about upgrading my 2018 11 inch iPad Pro, I watch videos like yours and it calms me down lol. Thanks!

I am watching this on a iPad Pro 2018 and it is working super quick and i think your video is spot on. I have been looking at the iPad Pro 2021 M1 but I can’t see the value of spending $1890 to do the same things that i am doing at the moment. Great video well done

Totally subbed👏🏽 presentation is everything❣️ I purchased the iPad 11 Pro 2018 found it brand new @ 256GB and wifi with cellular half the price. I'll have everything I need 😊 ordering the pencil before arrival.

I was thinking about getting a refurbished iPad Pro 11” 2018 model but the price difference was only $230 so I went with a brand new M1 11” Pro . I didn’t want to kick myself later for losing out on the extra RAM and storage, and the huge CPU/GPU bump.

Watching this video on my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9. My iPad still delivers and hasn’t disappointed me yet. It’s July 2023.

Speaking of future proof, my 2014 ipad air 2 is still kicking, albeit slightly slower than I would like. But, it is in a great condition - I use it for watching videos and reading ebooks only. Was thinking about upgrading to an iPad with bigger screen but didn't know which, probably a 2018 ipad Pro after watching your video. You just saved me ~$300 lol. Thanks for the review.

I bought a 12.9 in 2019. I put it in an otter box, and got the Apple Pencil. It does everything I could ever ask of it. It does stuff that I never knew it could do, and am still learning. I have had several iPads over the years, but the 12.9 in ch screen gives plenty of room to watch a movie, and surf the net at the same time.

Yes, I have the 2018 12.9 inch iPad Pro with 512 storage and it’s driving me crazy if I should upgrade or not. But your video kinda helped me to just stay as I am for now. I loved your presentation, the blurred background with the laptop operating in the background, the subtle lighting between foreground and background and great use of quality audio, this would be a video that I would be proud to produce myself.

Totally agree, have been wanting to upgrade my 2018 gen 3 iPad Pro 12.9, but cant justify the need to when I compare it to the new model.. I even did a side by side comparison with a mates IPad Pro 21, and yes there was a difference, but not justifiable at over 1K for a trade in or sell and upgrade.. I never use the iPad camera anyway..

Well…I’m still using the 10.5 Pro that came out in 2017 and I have to be honest..the more I watch videos like this one the more I find it hard to have a reason to change it…for my usage (browsing internet, sending emails, media consumption on YouTube and editing small 4K videos with LumaFusion) the 10.5 Pro with its A10X chip is still great. Only issue is with its battery but I think I’ll spend 99 bucks to replace it instead of buying a new iPad. I don’t think it is a great idea for Apple to introduce a brand new tablet every 16 months, people are becoming a bit tired of that as well…

I'm in the market for an iPad pro right now and was hesitating between the 2021 M1 model and the 2020 A12Z model, and your video entirely cleared this up for me. Thank you so much!!!

if you don't plan to get the magic keyboard you will also be perfectly fine with the base model iPad, its still very fast and can do exactly the same things as the pro can do

I’ll probably go another full year with this iPad, I only really use it for procreate, and it’s still snappy.

I got the 2020 ipad pro 11 inch new for $599 on student deal from best buy! I was planning on an ipad air 4 but the price was too good

I just bought the ipad pro 2017. Never owned a tablet before. I watch alot of videos of ipads. What puzzles me is that consumers buy extra items for the ipad so it looks more like a computer. On top of it these tablets may now compete with a computer. If you want a tablet, buy a tablet or if you want a computer go buy a computer. The beauty of a tablet is that it is a tablet, not a laptop or a desktop.

As someone that had 3 IPads so far - for today - get M1, it's cheaper, still super fast - all the Mchip features are there and it's still future proof. If you don't want monitor support and other things - get 2018 super cheap and there will be almost no difference for you.
