The Truth Behind the Most Famous Sandwich in The World

The Most Famous Sandwich in the World...

I have a theory about hyped up food destinations. At least for most Americans, we may not be used to getting super high quality ingredients in an affordable sandwich shop. So if you travel to Florence and get a sandwich at Al'Antico Vinaio, it is TRUE that it will probably be the best sandwich you have ever eaten. So it makes sense to recommend that spot to EVERY person who goes to Florence. And if you have one sandwich while visiting Florence, of course you'll wait in line for the best sandwich you'll ever have. And the cycle continues... but after trying sandwiches from other restaurants, I can promise you that any schiacciata in Florence will blow your mind. There is no need to wait in line or eat on a curb for a life-changing sandwich.

Personally, in the central market, I loved the sandwich I got at @laschiacciata_firenze with fresh fig, arugula, prosciutto, and stracciatella.

Thanks to the Italiani who perfected my pronunciation. The closest English sounds would be more like "Skiah-cha-ta"... there is a small "y" sound after the hard "k".... just don't say "SHIA-cah-tah" that's a BIG no no. Sorry and Thanks!

Mmm umbrella, really opens up a lot of the hidden flavours of the other ingredients in my sandwich.

Went to Italy 10 years ago through my school, when we got to Florence we had a rare day to ourselves so my friends and I set out to get lost to create a more memorable day. A few hours into wandering we started getting hungry and stumbled across a tiny little sandwich shop in what was basically an alley, the woman who ran the shop didn’t speak a word of English and had to call her son to translate. I kid you not that was the best sandwich I have ever eaten in my life, I have tried and failed to recreate it on a half dozen occasions and never came close to the pure perfection of that sandwich

I’m a florentine and I accompany tourists around for a company.
Just go to Fettunta. It’s right next to Antico Vinaio. Better schiacciata and same high quality ingredients.

You’re welcome.

As someone working in the same street as the famous sandwich shop (antico vinaio) thank you from this video 😂 always the people in front of our lunch room eating the sandwiches 😂, plus he is the biggest earner in all of Florence and doesn’t give his costumers a place to sit, that’s why many shop owners throw water on the curb to stop people from sitting down

Absolutely spot on. You have a finite amount of time on holiday... don't waste it queuing for food.... enjoy as many different places as possible. You'll just be in pain waiting for two hours. No place is truly that good to wait that long.

As a general rule, I try to go where locals go, because they've had years or their entire lives to try different restaurants and pick what they like. It's usually cheaper too.

For the first time ever I come across a food video that shows a place I already was and something I already ate 😊 it was fantastic

Spot on. I'm a long-time Florentine resident and can confirm that most of the stuff people are lining up in hour-long queues to try in Florence (antico vinaio, vivoli, babae wine window etc) are solid enough options; the irony is simply that everywhere else is offering stuff of same - and sometimes higher - quality. Do everyone a favor and spread out a bit!

Pro tip: if you are making a tour that includes florence but also either milan, rome and naples go at the antico vinaio there because the line is shorter and taste the same

Man you couldn't be more right. I'm Italian and I went to Florence for a school trip on May, and the city has lots of good places to eat well, that are unfortunately obfuscated by those tourist traps in the historic centre. Thank you for sharing this.

Really appreciate your honest advice… I wouldn't want to spend 1-2 hours like that just for food, be it any fancy, good/ worth it, AND definitely not eating it outside on the pavement after all that waiting. Vacations should be about exploring the places you're visiting, not obsessing over famous shops and posting your pics with their " special" stuff

I live in Florence and you're absolutely right! You can find a fantastic schiacciata literally everywhere in the city 😊

All antico is very good and they have so many stores together that you barely wait now a days, that being said the market is awesome, the second floor is where the food is btw

I live in Philly and this my local equivalent of how we tell people "don't bother with Genos or Pat's for a cheesesteak. Go to DiNicks and get a roast pork, walk redding terminal, or hit one of a dozen better steak spots."

I had no idea about these sandwiches before I went to Italy and stumbled upon a little cafe that made them. Seemed like a tourist trap kinda place but we really just wanted some food after a lot of museums. The sandwich was and coffee were so good, I almost cried.
