Just wanted to say that this explained the nuances of starting onions from seed better than anything else I have ever seen. I was currently making the mistake of too much light, so thanks for that tidbit. And cutting the stuck ones was also a brilliant tip.

Seed viability of the alliums (onions, leeks, chives, garlic, and their relatives) is fairly short— usually 1 to 2 years. So it’s best to plant onion seeds the same year you buy them— they may not be good next year or three years from now.

You are the only one that helped me with what to do after germination out of at least 15 videos. Keep up the complete videos. Thanks

73 yo life long struggle never get big bulbs. Storms in 2024 pruned trees hopefully getting me over hump. Got tons of sun last year but after bulb production. One thing I’ve never done is cut tops during indoor time. Taking off heat reduce light time and get fan on them soon as germ cross fingers. Thank you very much. Great video

Thanks so much! I’m used to growing potatoes, radishes, and other yummy treats, but this is the first year I’ll be planting the humble onion!

The way you deliver your videos are so eloquent and helpful. Thank you!!! I am brand new to growing from seed anything more than a tomato plant. I am doing a whole variety of organic veggies this year and onions is one! This is so so helpful!

Good heads up on the number of hours of light needed, even as seedlings 🌱. Thanks!

Nice video. I'm in Maine, about 45° latitude. For 2 years I bought plants. They grew
well, but a bit expensive. $10-18 per bunch of about 60. Last year I tried from seed,
just to see if it would work.. 1 order of Patterson pelleted seed from Johnny's, $7
1000 seeds, no big deal if this experiment failed, but they grew! Why pay $20 for
100 onions, when you can grow 800+ onions for $7. This year I'm all in.
Already have 100 Ailsa Craig's started and sprouting
150 Patterson's just planted 3 days ago
150 Cabernet's just planted 3 days ago (red storage)
Will be planting 150 Expression's this weekend when the Ailsa's come off the heat
mat. Sounds like a lot of Onions but I have 1, 4' x 8' dedicated bed, and also plant
them as companions around Brassica's, Tomato's, Peppers, and Carrots to repel
insects, and critters. It worked. Plus I want to know which stores the best for next year.
TYFS, Mark and Rosa Again, Great video!

Thank you for the tip about cutting the shoots to 3 to 4 inches!

Great video. I learned I need to decrease the light because right now they are getting 14 hrs per day. I started them on Feb 8. Last yr was my first attempt at onions from seed and I had marginal results. There were other issues, like heavy neglectful weed pressure. But I will decrease the light as you have instructed. Thx for the help!
