Your point about using the console is absolutely true (although saddening in the year 2013). However, what i often do is moving files in adjacent directories e.g. from /foo/bar1/bar2 to /foo/bar1. In these scenarios splitting the screen really helps, because you just navigate to /foo/bar1/bar2, press F3 and then navigate to the parent directory in one of the screens. Without that feature you always have to navigate through the entire directory tree.

There have always been features from both Windows 7/8 and OS X that I've loved, and since I switch between them all day long, I've long wanted to be able to use features from both. While it's been a while since I've used it, I think Ubuntu has finally filled that gap. OS X's multiple workspaces, Windows' Snapping, OS X's slick interface, and Windows 8.1's powerful search are all here.

Hmm, not necessarily. What I did just 10 minutes ago actually was that I opened the parent folder ("/foo/bar1") then right-clicked "bar2" and opened that in a new tab. Now I had two options: 1) drag the files directly *onto* the tab to open it and drop the files in bar2/, or 2) drag the tab itself out to become a new window then drop the files in bar2/. Very fast, and only requires you to navigate the directory tree once. I think this was possible a good while before the recent upgrades, too.

I am glad that you gave it a try.
For me, I think Linux gives all the looks and ease of use as a Mac, but unlike both Mac and Windows you don't feel like you have just paid to borrow their OS and they will update and force restart your computer whenever they feel like and so on.
You actually own the system, and it does things FOR you, and even if you need to give it a hand getting things going here and there, it doesn't do something that you didn't tell it to. I love that feeling.

Can't wait to build my new PC and run this beauty on it :) Thank you for the great video!

Thanks. I didn't know about playonlinux, which sounds great. I just put new Ubuntu on USB disk to try it out and must say it made a huge step forward comparing to what i experienced couple years ago. I've got some video drivers problem, but apart of that i find it super friendly - i'd say this Linux doesn't feel like Linux anymore (that meant to be a compliment).

I simply made a Ubuntu partition and a smaller Windows Partition only for games. As a side effect the Windows Partition shows up in Ubuntu like an external storage and I can access/manage the folders and files there - that also says enough about Windows security, because this even works if a Windows password is set...

The "new" bit isn't the bounding box, it's the 'ghost' of the window that's being snapped. it appears very briefly. You can see it better in another video on this channel.

yes u get the same software center as Ubuntu as far as I know. It supports many apps. Try a live disk to see if you like it. It is very fast.

@kokitoz I think you mean OSX rather than iOS. iOS is for the iPad, iPhone and the iPod family. Fedora is nice, fuduntu is certainly a distro worth looking into :)

The new Nautilus lost a ton of Features for no apparent reason. One of the features I use on a day to day basis is the split view (press F3). It makes moving files between folders really easy. With the new Nautilus, one has to open a completely new folder, navigate to the target directory and then align the windows next to each other to drag and drop.

You can switch back if you dual boot when installing.

Well to be honest the only step that isn't required in the F3 case is aligning the windows side by side. The other steps have to be taken in either case and the aligning step can be done in 1 second flat by flinging both windows to either edge of the screen or hitting Super+Left and Super+Right, respectively, displaying them side-by-side. It's still possible to be efficient in my opinion. Although, I usually go the command-line route because I find that's *the* fastest way to move files. :-)

If you have 2 operating systems installed then at startup it will give you choices on whutch operating system to use. If your new to ubuntu you probably should keep both untill you really feel safer with ubuntu. Honestly I think you should forever keep both cause ive had experiences with tons of ubuntu errors and it's nice to have a backup

I am considering putting this on a PC I have had for about 2 years which has been collecting dust after accumulating some viruses. It was a refurbished  HP desktop I bought on ebay for like 120$ or something. It has 2 gbs of ram and an 80 gb HD with a 2 ghz processor. Is this enough to run this version of Ubuntu?

Arg, the primary thing stopping me from trying out a linux distro such as Ubuntu is my frequent use of photoshop... Still might check it out anyways.

I think Ubuntu has really moved to be a lot more user friendly as off late.
Actually, I think its a lot more intuitive then both Mac and Windows.
There are still some setup, getting started issues related to special hardware, drivers and printers which can be a bit of a mess getting to work, but most things are super easy. Even getting windows programs working isn't deficult any longer. Just download playonlinux and things like spotify, MS office etc will install in just a few clicks.

The workspace switcher icon only shows the active workspace in 2x2 workspace arrangement. Fail.
