In this video, we’re going to discuss the Path of Exile Skill Gems and Links. Skills in Path of Exile are represented by gems, and these gems must be connected in order for the skill to be activated. We’ll also discuss how to find Path of Exile Gems and how to connect the skills on our skill bar.

I just wanted to mention that if you look right under the gem name it has tags, an easy way to tell if a gem can support a skill is if it has a matching tag. There are some exceptions such as skills that cannot be supported by a specific type of mechanic, but in general a gem tagged with projectile can be supported by any support with the projectile support tag. The thing you showed is useful but that only shows which skills it can support from the ones you currently have equipped so tags are important as well, especially since you can search the gem vendor by tag, for example if you type in projectile it will highlight all projectile supports and projectile active skills.

Also when hovering over a support/active skill it will highlight each other gem that is working together with it. Also you can tell based on the letters on the skill icon which supports are active on a gem.

Some other things that you didn't mention but are important.

Each gem has 3 alternate versions, commonly referred to as alt quality, these alternate quality change the affect of the skill slightly and are only obtainable in the heist mechanic, but this is the main reason you would want to reset a gem to lvl 1 as it's better to reset a alt quality gem to lvl 1 from lvl 20 than to level it down 13 times from 20 to 7 for example.

All normal gems have a maximum level of 21 that can only be obtained by corrupting the gem with a vaal orb, however there is only a 1/6 chance that your gem will gain the additional level, this is why most people level 6 copies of their main skill in their off hand until they get the correct corruption. The other outcomes are: Does nothing, Increase quality by 3%, decrease quality by 3%, become vaal, and decrease level by 1.

In the incursion league mechanic, which is through Alva in act 7, you can with the right understanding of the mechanic also gain a special way to double corrupt a gem to roll the vaal orb twice, meaning it's possible to obtain a lvl 21 vaal skill or lvl 21 / 23 quality gem. But this is a bit advanced and only necessary for giga min maxing.

There also exist Awakened gems, which are gems that only drop from end game bosses, they are enhanced versions of existing support gems and not all support gems have awakened variants. The awakened versions have a max lvl of 5 with corruption and it will on average take these gems as long as it takes to level a gem from 1-20 to level one time. When an awakened gem hits level 4 it will gain a special ability, such as "supported skills damage cannot be reflected"

Lastly there are a few gems that are not sold by lilly these are known as exceptional gems and include: Enhance, Empower, Enlighten. Each of these are extremely rare and powerful and they each have an awakened version that only drops from one of the end game bosses.

There are also a few gems that can only be obtained through vendor recipes / league specific content. Specifically the portal skill gem can be obtained from breach, and elemental penetration can be acquired through a vendor recipe.

Watching this video reminded me how deep skill gems go for a new player.. and its all knowledge I have for granted from years of playing.. you need another whole video just to finish the skill gems and recipes and quality variations and awakened gems, etc..

You mentioned not really knowing the point of the vendor recipe with a regret orb to bring it down to level 1. Its primarily used for some very special gems that Lily does not sell. Alternative Quality Gems that you can get out of Heist for example. You can also technically use it to downlevel a high quality gem that you have (it retains its quality % with the vendor recipe)

You said you don't really get why would you want to reset your gem to level 1. Its not that common for people to use the regret orb recipe but there is one and that is to reset the gem level of an Alternate quality gems. These gems are come from a mechanic called Heist and all of the gems are pre-leveled to a certain point but you want to use that special quality gem during the campaign so you can play your build as soon as possible. Also there is another very useful recipe for gems. If you level any gem to 20 then vendor it with a gemcutter's prism the gem will become level 1 like using a regret however it also gets 20% quality (basically you transfer the gem level to quality so you getting 20% quality on any gem with 1 gemcutter's prism).

Why would you wanna make explanation/guide videos as a new player, it doesnt make sense to me haha. I am eager to know your first impressions about the game though. But it's weird that you are trying to explain to other people how it works, when you just learned the basics. It's an amazing system, but also pretty self-explanatory. Have a good one :)

AH~ ok. The reason for the regret orb for a gem is that the lvl at wich the gems are sold to you, are relative to your own lvl. So, at low lvl they are all going to be lvl 1 to 5 but whern you are high lvl, they are going to be sold at lvl 10 or more. For skills like cast when damage taken or inmortal call, you want to keepthen at lvl 1 or under lvl 3 in most builds and the time will come where you can no longer find those gems at that price... maybe from sosa and lily roth but some times is just a pain in the ass to go to them each time.
