Pleural Effusion: Explanation of X-ray Findings

Obliteration of the costophrenic angle occurs due to the presence of pleural fluid. The fluid forms a meniscus with a concave upper border and an ascending lateral tip. As well, because of this dense opacity, the interface between the fluid and heart border/hemidiaphragm is indistinct; this is known as the silhouette sign. Unlike with consolidation, air bronchograms are not present.

Last picture I would have a problem differentiating between consolidation and effusion, what is the main sign to look for in order to distinguish the two? Air bronchogram? Meniscus sign is not so obvious the line is more horisontal
