This huge mako shark jumps onto this family's boat in the united states and they rescue it and set it free!

An amazing video has emerged from the United States of an enormous shark which jumped onto a fishing boat and became stuck.

In the clip, which was filmed on July 6 off the coast of Long Island, the fisherman look on in horror as the huge mako shark writhes around on the deck of the boat with its body trapped beneath the guard-rail.

The shark even bites the rail several times at it struggles to release itself.

Eventually the fishermen manage to cut the shark free and it slips into the water and swims away.

"We're gonna need a bigger boat!" Joked Captain Don from Outlaw Fishing Charters.

The video is quickly turning viral in America.

All of you people do know that this is a strong, large, heavy, and unpredictable predator right? Don't act like setting this Mako Shark free is a simple job. Even if you just go behind the shark, it would still be able to hit you hard enough to cause an injury or potentially push you in the water. As you can see the shark is stuck because of its dorsal fin and you cant just simply fold it like paper mache. Also, you can't really blame these people for not being able to help, all of them are probably just your average person who doesn't have experience with handling sharks.

For anyone who doesn't understand how sharks work: That shark is in a precarious situation. It's grumpy and scared. Obviously, you can't get too close without the proper gear, or that thing will bite and try to kill you. They stated, over and over again, that it had jumped onto the boat. There's not much you can do with a shark of that size, that isn't tranqed. Hell, a shark 1/5 the size is still extremely powerful, and hard to keep a hold of. These sharks are known for their speed in the water. They're very strong. So people need to stop getting all pissy and upset. Maybe do some fishing for yourselves. If this happens to you, try and release it.

That shark is prolly dead rn due to the fact it was left with rope tied around its tail fin which will cause fin rot, or even gangrene

That Mako had a tail rope on it. It did not jump into the boat. They caught it with a pole with a wire leader (clearly seen in the video) then they probably tail roped it and pulled it on board and lost control of the situation. Then were clearly childish enough to cut the tail rope after it got stuck suspended upside down. Next time pop the hook out with a hook release gaff and save the animal some torture and trauma.

Ok for all the people saying "these guys are idiots they deserve to die" no they don't you act like you're always ready for a shark to catch your fishing hook and jump on the boat it's uncommon for that to happen you wouldn't know what to do be fucking realistic and besides it dangerous to try to save it while it's moving like that it could fucking bite your leg you all underestimate the mako shark's power of course it's sad but that thing jumped on there randomly and they tried to save it but didn't make it in time so shut up and just be sad that thing died don't blame the people.

Although I do feel sad that the shark was clearly hurt or possibly even dead, this was a tricky situation to be in.

Makos are known for jumping very high, so the fact that it jumped on board and got stuck was a total accident. Even if these are experienced fishers, having a big live Mako on your deck is extremely dangerous and attempting to help it up close could be very dangerous.

It’s easy to say “I could have done this, or they could have done that, ” but these guys are a LOT bigger than they seem and are pure muscle so going head to head with a distressed animal if this size is asking for trouble.

Although I’m not happy with the end result of this altercation, they did the best they could.

a lot of ppl said "free the shark"
they can't just simply free the shark because the shark can bite them

When you guys get a boat and a mako shark jumps into it I wanna see you guys do anything better since apparently you are all shark experts and can safely throw one back in the water

Why pretend to release a fish that you were targeting??? You can very easily see the hook in its mouth and the wire leader that it was caught on. If I was trying to safely release a pelagic the last thing I would do is hang it upside down by its tail for a while and the cut the rope leaving the knot around it's tail. So either that fish went home in a cooler or these people don't belong on a fishing boat.
They very clearly let it suffocate to death then put a tail rope on it and staged the horrible release. Explaining the cut in the video.

People in these comments saying they should’ve helped it obviously don’t know how dangerous it could be. Not only that but it’s not like they were expecting this to happen, it’s easy to criticise while watching but if our in the same situation without any preparation I doubt many people would be able to safely save the shark. Just a very unfortunate incident

That thing is totally dead, some bigger shark probably killed and ate it because it is weak. Poor thing.

That shark was dead when they "released" it. And he was cleary caught, the line was still in his mouth.

For those people who don't understand how a shark can die, obviously their gills need water to get the oxygen needed for it to survive. But the other thing is although the shark's head is underwater it needs to move for it to basically breathe, the shark trying to jump to the person it was looking at was a reflex basically it was drowning in its own blood plus it turning around would be trying to gasp for air and not reaching towards that person to kill it. The mako probably hit the boat too hard and broke a part of it's skeleton, this is a cruel video of a mako dying and I do not get why it is on youtube or why they even released this video. They should've clearly researched sharks before they uploaded this video.

No one saying "poor shark" is brave enough to go near one while it's thrashing like that. So stop competing for the "Most Outraged Award".

A lot of what they say and the way the video is filmed indicates that they deliberately hauled that mako shark on the boat. I've been trying to analyze the video, and while its not good enough quality to be for certain I believe there is a hook in the shark's mouth. The way it suddenly starts bleeding makes me heavily inclined to believe so— I thought it was from banging up its gills against the railing at first, but then I noticed the gills never once bled, when they would've if the bleeding was caused by that. The shark could've also bit itself and caused the bleeding, but I've never heard of or seen that happen. It seems very unlikely, especially in this situation.

And again, the way that they speak is very odd. "I'd let it die right there", "That's a nice mako", and just the fact that they're laughing at it struggling... it's all so fishy. There's no way in my mind that they didn't haul this shark on the boat and staged it like it "jumped" on the boat and pretended to free it at the end. That abrupt cut is especially fishy, since they don't show the process of tying the shark's tail and hanging it overboard to release. Most videos would still film that part, no?

I have heard of sharks and other creatures such as mola mola jumping onto boats, maybe that did happen here. But everything with this video just points to it being an attempt to cover up animal cruelty.

I feel for this shark either way. If this really is just a case of the shark jumping on the boat and they're just being weird about it, then I guess I could forgive their behaviors. I wouldn't want to get near a scared and dying animal; that's when they're most dangerous. I just don't think it's the case here.

Also, to everyone who thinks this shark is alive by the end: it's extremely doubtful, as mako sharks are obligate ram ventilators. The way they released it is improper for a ram ventilator— they have to be manually swam around until they regain strength— and we have no idea how long it was before they actually managed to even get its head in the water. Even if it didn't suffocate, it's very likely that its gills and/or brain were damaged.

Overall a very suspicious video.
