Definitely one of the saddest episodes, with one of the most frightening recreations. Knowing that the people on the Tupolev were mostly children, watching it being split in half and disintegrating as it fell to the ground was so hard to watch.

RIP all who died. Also RIP Peter Nielsen, the Air Traffic Controller who was murdered in the aftermath by one of the victims’ fathers.

"Deadly Crossards" is one of the most hearthbreaking episodes of Air Crash Investigation. It's really hard to see how 71 people died on a Mid-Air collision. RIP to the 71 victims and Peter Nilsen (Peter was ATC that night) he was murdered by the father of one of the victims.

Atc (Peter Nielsen) had to deal with 4 different planes
He had to watch 2 different screens because the other atc was on a break
He was trying to connect Aero Lloyd flight 1135 (One of the planes he had to control)to Frederikshavn (I think), but the phones were offline, so he couldn't
He was focusing on the Aero Lloyd too much, while the dhl and bashkirian airlines were at a collision course at level 360
When Peter came back to help the tu-154, he told them to descend, and the crew of flight 2937 listened to him, while their TCAS (Traffic collision avoidance system) told them to climb
Meanwhile the TCAS on the DHL told them to descend, and they listened to the TCAS, leading two planes at the same altitude
Poor Peter thought he was all good, and went back to flight 1135
He later came back to Bashkirian Airlines flight 2937, but it was too late
Later Peter got stabbed several times in front of his family by Vitaly Kaloyev ( who had 2 children on the TU-154)
Very weirdly he went to prison only for 8 years, which later became 5 years and three months

Such a terrible accident, both for the mostly children on the chartered Tupolev, and for the poor DHL pilots who struggled to save the plane all the long way down. And Mr. Peter Nielsen, who did the best he could. The one good thing that came from this event was the universal prioritization of TCAS collision warning alert instructions over ATC. Because the Russian crew’s nation of origin did not prioritize TCAS, but ATC, unlike most of the world at the time, Mr. Nielsen took a 50/50 gamble on whether to tell the Tupolev to climb or descend to avoid the collision, and tragically, he lost.

Horrifying. Just imagine being a young german boy, playing ball with your friends, just to see large balls of fire falling from the sky and crashing into your neighbourhood. Rest in peace to the victims, and my condolences to all their families.

The thought of these poor kids faling to their death sends shivers down my spine, RIP The kids, The DHL pilots And Peter Nielsen who tried his best, I hope they are in a better place now.

Accidental was 100% preventable, the TCAS system was warning BOTH planes to climb/descend to avoid collision. But, unfortunately TCAS went ignored as pilots were instructed to listen/trust ATC…
