The lady who heard she died and asked „if they rammed a wooden stick through her heart to ensure she’s dead“ still lives rent free in my head

Thatcher was so cataclysmically red pilled she said we _don't_ live in a society.

"[Discussing the cost of Thatcher's funeral] For that much money they could have given everyone in Scotland a shovel, we woulda dug down to hell and handed her over in person"

- Frankie Boyle

When my friends at a girls night out come up with "women in power are much better" I always remember them of Old Maggie. Women in power are like men in power, only power matters.

Selling off gas, oil, water was the equivalent of taking the family silver to cash converters.

"What would you like to know, would you like a list of every donor since 1955?"

Yes, please, that would be marvellous.

I can't believe you went from parkour videos to highly astute political analysis... but I'm here for it!

My dad and my grandparents still hate Thatcher. He says she ultimately destroyed British communities. Before you’d know everyone in your neighbourhood, but because she shut all the businesses and mines. She’s the reason this country has no industry and we have to rely on foreign exports.

I was brought up to hate her, my parents did, so I did. One day I thought "I should do my own research" so I did... and guess what? I ended up hating her 100× more than I previously did. She ruined this country. Everything wrong with this place stems from that witch.

It's like the US and UK have been competing to vote against their own best interests the hardest.

My grandfather was a miner that fought for his job on the picket line and was arrested by Thatcher's government, he was treated like a criminal for being a hard working man just fighting for his family and he never forgave her, I'll never forgive her for what she did to him either

I like what Frankie Boyle said after Thatcher passed away.
"I think it's the only funeral in history where the 21 gun salute is aimed at the coffin."

The "poll tax, " officially known as the Community Charge, was a flat-rate tax introduced by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s government in 1990 as part of her local government reforms in the U.K. The tax was controversial and deeply unpopular, ultimately contributing to Thatcher’s downfall as Prime Minister. Here’s a closer look at what it was and why it became so contentious:

What Was the Poll Tax?
The poll tax replaced the rates system, which had been in place for funding local government services. Under the rates system, taxes were based on the value of a property—essentially, homeowners and landlords paid taxes based on their property’s value to fund local services.

The Community Charge, however, was a flat tax that required every adult (aged 18 and over) to pay the same amount, regardless of income or property value. The idea was that everyone would contribute equally to local government funding, which was meant to be a more "fair" system of local taxation.

Reasons for Introducing the Poll Tax
Thatcher’s government argued that the rates system was outdated and unfair, as it placed a disproportionate burden on property owners and varied based on property values. The poll tax was intended to:

Make Local Councils Accountable: By making everyone pay, the government hoped people would scrutinize local government spending more carefully, as every adult would have a stake.
Spread the Tax Burden: The poll tax aimed to distribute the cost of local services across more people, not just homeowners, thereby supposedly lightening the load on individual households.
Why Was the Poll Tax So Controversial?
Regressive Nature: Since it was a flat tax, everyone paid the same amount, regardless of their ability to pay. This meant that low-income individuals faced the same tax as wealthy individuals, which hit poorer people much harder as a percentage of their income.

Unfairness Perception: Many saw the tax as fundamentally unjust, as it ignored differences in people’s wealth, property values, and ability to pay. Critics argued it shifted the tax burden from wealthier homeowners to renters and low-income individuals.

Difficult to Enforce: The tax was difficult to collect and enforce, as many people, particularly in lower-income groups, simply couldn’t afford to pay. In some areas, this led to mass non-compliance and resistance.

Mass Protests and Civil Unrest: The poll tax led to widespread protests across the U.K., culminating in the Poll Tax Riots in March 1990, particularly a major riot in London’s Trafalgar Square. The protests reflected the deep anger among citizens over the perceived unfairness of the tax.

Consequences of the Poll Tax
The poll tax became a major factor in the decline of Thatcher’s popularity and political power. Facing intense backlash from the public and her own party, Thatcher resigned in November 1990. The poll tax was eventually replaced in 1993 by the Council Tax, which took into account property values, but was less severe than the original rates system.

Ask any Scotsman or Irishman at a swimming competition what their favourite stroke is and they'll answer, "Thatcher's".

I'm not British, but my Mancunian told me how he was affected by Thacher closing the mines. His father was unemployed, and then he finally found work, but he had to travel constantly. He was almost never home, and his parents got a divorce. Of course, money was tight, so there were times his family went hungry. Overall, my other British friends celebrated when she died. From what I saw in this video, she wasn't a good leader and only looked out for rich people.

I arrived in the UK in the early 00s, and in my first day here, my soon-to-be father-in-law took us all out to the pub on the way home from the airport so he could stop and explain the evils of Thatcher to me.

17:05 - lmao she's describing paying for a service, where did she think the private sector got its money from, magic? It's the same bizzarre logic that gives you "I don't want to pay tax to fund a nationalised not-for-profit healthcare service, I want to pay even more money for a for-profit privatised healthcare service, because socialism."
