This week, I headed to check out an abandoned CASTLE in Texas. A castle that a couple just invested their life savings into! When I heard of this, I had to take a trip down. So in this video, I packed up my stuff from Cerro Gordo and headed to see what this castle was all about!

Mailing Address: PO Box 490, Lone Pine, CA 93545

Thank you all so so much for the ongoing support!!

Hey everyone! Thank you so much for checking this video out! I'm back soon with a lot more from around Cerro Gordo proper - renovations, mine explorations, and more! Let me know below if there's anything special you want to see in future videos! Thank you so so much for the ongoing support!

I live down the road from there as a kid you could see it driving by but as I grew up it just disappeared when the property overgrew, and I forgot about it until they came along. They started clearing the overgrowth and now you can see it again it's pretty cool.

Hi Brent. Long time no hear. Was great that you visited the castle. Sure looks like labor of love. Sometimes you have to get to the bottom, strip it down to the foundations and rebuilding and reinforce the building to its former glory. Or even a change. Make bigger rooms, more light which will open up the dark space. Good luck to Ian. Thanks for sharing your dreams. Make it happen. Regards from South Africa 🇿🇦.

The stress of trying to renovate that place must be overwhelming. I hope he succeeds. I wish him all the best.

Wow what a beautiful structure and I can see why he feels so overwhelmed. It’s going to take some big inverters for him to pull this off. That or a huge amount of volunteers to help him out to repair this beautiful landmark!

I have a suggestion for Ian. In TX, & probably other states, we have 'adopt a section of highway'. Perhaps he could accept sponsorships to 'adopt' a room or section of the castle, even a window or faucet. Each contribution or contributor could be entitled to that amount of discount off a night's stay once the castle is completed. This is the first thing that came to my mind & I'm only 7:30 into the video :) Or maybe he could schedule 'group' workdays at the castle. Or possibley be used by wood shop, welder, plumber or other such trades for teaching students 'how to' while also serving to help restore the castle. TXRX might be a great resource to contact! Owner could dedicate certain areas, rooms, or working sections to the school(s)/teacher(s) who taught & restored items. He is just down the road from Houston so I would think there would be a lot of interest to participate in such an endeavor by various groups or individuals. Good luck to you Ian & Mrs. Ian!! Thanks Ghost Town Living for bringing this to our attention! (This is also the first time I have seen your channel :)

stop calling it a castle. Castles do not 'rot' from the inside. Stone cladding does not make a castle.

I lived in Dickinson and Texas City for a long time, the kids always enjoyed seeing it from the road. When I go see my oldest in Alvin, it's always pointed out along Hwy 6 by whoever is in the car with me. Nice video! 🏴‍☠️🏁

The ‘castle’ is such an eclectic mix of architecture. It would be fascinating to find out who built what and when. I will look him up on his channel. Good to see you again Brent enjoying your break away from Cerro Gordo. Take care, be safe. ❤ Dorset, UK

I love that place...passed it many times. I'd find a couple of good rooms to live in, put some window a/c's or a roll-around unit in there to beat the heat and get to tearing out all the inner wall coverings in the water damaged areas.

I replaced the entire back wall of my brick house due to termite damage. It was also a load bearing wall for the upstairs rooms so I removed a couple of feet of sheet rock from the ceiling all along the wall as well as all the sheet rock from the wall itself. Then I built a temporary 2X4 wall a couple of feet inside from the exterior wall to hold up the upstairs before I removed the termite damaged wall studs. I could see the back of the brick wall after all that was removed. I built the new wall and reattached the metal straps from it to the brick wall (they tie the brick wall at random points to the wall studs to stabilize the brick wall from falling over...don't lean on it while the wall studs are torn down! it will fall over). Then I removed my temporary wall, and re-sheet rocked and painted the new wall and the part of the ceiling I had removed....by myself with little experience.

On that castle I'd just tarp off the roof, then rebuild the bottom floor and work my way upward. Then you'll have good wood to hold up the roofing when you replace it last. I think it is totally doable for a couple.

to castle owner or creator of this

There is a place in Houston (about an hour from there) called "Re-Use Warehouse". If you or any friend of yours is a member of any kind of art guild or association this warehouse will let you browse there facility and take whatever you need for FREE! They salvage doors and hardware, sinks, tubbs, windows...everything from old homes that are being torn down. They make the items available for people to re-purpose in their own restorations or art projects.

I am not an artist but my son in law is and he took me there to get 5 solid wood doors for my house after a flood. Just picked anything we wanted, they weigh it for some accounting purposes, and we loaded it up and left! You could actually join some kind of historical association based on your awesome project and qualify yourself...or just find an artist to get you in.

Also, I'd keep those apt rooms if they could easily be made functional. If they could be isolated from the construction areas you could possibly VERY CAREFULLY vet some helpers to have rent free for a few months for some demo work. There are a lot of people struggling who could use a deal like that but you'd have to be very careful to not hire drug addicts or people with children who could get hurt around the construction. Just a thought, but definitely check out "Re-Use Warehouse"! Wish you all the best!
