Bad Starter Sound / Noise - 3 Most common problems

1. Starter grinding noise - starter not lining up correctly with the ring gear on the flywheel, missing or damaged gear teeth, or a faulty solenoid.
2. If you turn the key and hear the starter spinning but don't hear the engine cranking, then the pinion gear isn't thrusting forward.
3. You hear a clicking noise when you turn the key it may be - faulty starter motor, dead battery, loose wiring or corrosion.

The first one (BMW) the grinding sound is what mine sounds like when I crank the motor. Now it has got worse & keeps grinding while driving. Like the starter gear/driver doesn’t disengage. Thankyou for this video as it has helped me a lot. I had one mechanic tell me it was my release bearing on the clutch assembly but my clutch is fine & I have no issues changing gears etc, just a very noisy starter motor. Fingers crossed that it’s only my starter motor which I’m replacing first & hope that I’m right & not the bearing as well. 👌🤞🏼

Bro i have the second problem on my w211 is just like a ac turned on max or a grinding noise and the car dont start i have to turn it on 4-5 times than the car starts but happends very rarely its embarassing bcs everybody looking on my car my question is does this damage the flying wheel ??

Im confused, what the difference from a bad starter, bad starter motor, bad starter solenoid? Regardless do i just buy a new starter, problems solved?

My Mazda 2 2009, makes a similar noise to the second noise, but the theres also a very slow cranking noise too. Any ideas?

What if it cranks and stops cranking for a second and then continues cranking again

problematic starters that wont move forward OR arent spinning, can often be brought back to like with soem knocks on the relay that is in the housing. HOWEVER this should not be considerd a fix and is only for emergency uses! and dont hit it hard, it is still a cast part!
