I have a 2007 civic that grinds for .5-1 second after starting the car even though I let go of the key. But only on the first start of the day when its cold. After that no more.

Same case with my 3.5 ecoboost 2011 F150. I bought Aftermarket starter because my original is dead. There a times if I turn the key ignition on there is a loud noise looks failing to engage with a fly wheel. But after a few attempts it starts smoothly. I thought it was a starter. I brought it back to store and they gave me a new Aftermarket starter but still the same problem. I decided to go to auto shop and they checked my flywheel and we found out that 1/4 part of the flywheel is lose tread. The front of the thread of the flywheel ( face to starter ) is gone and just a half of a thread left. And I realised that there is no problem with Aftermarket starter that I bought. I paid almost $1600 including new oil seal, new flywheel, transmission oil and labour. I am fine because I knew what the problem is and I am confident with my truck now. Thank you for all the comments it helps me a lot.

The ring gear teeths chip away or worn out. And the angle of the teeths on starter is also filling away too. need to replace boths

My 2002 Camaro just started doing this. Eventually starts and restarts fine no problem but the grind still happens on initial morning start. Warm weather. Hope it’s just the starter.

If you hear this sound the only thing you’ll hear of grinding when starting a car is if the car starts and you don’t let go of the starter, if not, gears in your starter or the plate along the crankshaft (flex plate for AT vehicles, and flywheel for MT vehicles) will be worn out like a ribbed cookie if you slammed it to the ground and reassembled it

Hi 1987skier That sounds very much like a noise I'm presently getting from my v8 Dodge Ram. I first heard it when the old starter motor failed to crank, but after I installed a new starter motor it is still there, and it is loudest when starting from cold. Mine sometimes sounds like a vacuum leak; It is a bit of a mystery!!!!

Got my clutch replaced. Same flywheel. And it started to grind. Only grind after the engine starts and starter releases. And bit worse in winter. I'll check connections when it's warmer

Could be the incorrect number of teeth on the starter

You need a spacer between starter and mounting area about .5 millimeter
