Lord of the Rings: Quiet Environmentalism

An environmental video analysis of The Lord of the Rings' environmentalism. The creates a reverence for nature, New Zealand's landscapes, and the environment.

The books revere nature even more so. Every environment and landscape is described down to the texture of tree barks and other miniscule details. It's a travel journal more than anything.
Not to mention the Scourging of the Shire.

Not a raving environmental activist, but I appreciated this. Not twisting Tolkien's world, in fact Tolkien's himself lived in naturally beautiful places and cities touched by the industrial revolution, and so his experiences of his environment seeped into his work. He may not use the world environmentalism, but he could have been.

Treebeard looking at Isengard over the shoulder always reminds me of the first image of the industrial town in Princess Mononoke.

JRR Tolkien himself was an environmentalist. Tolkien hated the gas internal combustion engine.

Their culture's been stuck in an Eco-Industrial Steampunk Revolution for thousands of years. Ours started in 1700 and ended in 1990. Long live the Pirate Republic!

I loved the lord of the rings triology before i saw this video, and now i love it even more.

A really interesting lens to look at the film from, and one that has a lot of evidence to support it. There's definitely a truth to the beauty of the untouched environment, and it would be better if more people understood the extent by which we are changing the world away from this image.
