Ozzy Osbourne - The Meaning of Patient Number 9

Lyrics

[Intro]
"Is there a way out of here?"
"Hey, I love you, but you [?]"
"I wanna go home"
"Hey, hahaha"
"Hahaha"
"Excuse me, could you tell how to get out of here?"
"Hahaha"
"I want to go home"
"Hahaha"
"Mommy, mommy"

[Verse 1]
Every hallway's painted white as the light
That will guide you to your help
Making friends with strangers inside my mind
'Cause they seem to know me well

[Pre-Chorus]
Hiding the pills inside your mouth
Swallow 'em down, then spit them out
I hear the laughter scream and shout
"No tomorrow"

[Chorus]
When they call your name, better run and hide
Tell you you're insane, you believe their lies
I'm not gettin' out, no, I'm not gettin' out alive (Ooh)
I'm not gettin' out 'cause I'm patient number nine (Ooh)

[Verse 2]
When the sun goes down, the animals cry
That's a sound you won't forget

[Guitar Solo]

[Bridge]
When the walls of a padded cell become reality
How many tears till I ground myself 'cause no one cries for me?
If there's a God, why'd he let the Devil do his work on me? Oh yeah
If there's a God, what am I doing here?

[Chorus]
When they call your name, better run and hide
Tell you you're insane, you believe their lies

He also has fallen in his house and had 4 surgeries in the last 2 years on his cervical and spine. I really think this is base on his expedites after all these surgeries they gave him so many pills to take. In an interview Sharon told the doctor to please help him get off these pills he can’t keep taking these, it was too much.

Labas Alex, I enjoyed your personal explanation of the video, however, I'd like to give you my take on it and I'd appreciate your feedback. As most Metalheads know, Metal songs are usually quite simple and to the point. Many other genre's as well for that matter. That said, most Metalheads I know are quite educated and generally quite intelligent, whatever field they happen to be in, from city sanitation to lawyer or doctor. That's the way it was back then, if you were smart and your parents had the money, you went to college, if you were even smarter and they didn't have that money, you went to work. I've noticed however, for the most part interests include history, neurology, psychiatry, etc., and can go on to dozens of others from anthropology to spirituality and everything in between. I'm 54 and I find similarly aged Metalheads to fall into everything I've mentioned so far, college degrees or not.
The cyclical nature seems almost spot on, if you think of that cycle as conception, being born, going through life, then death.
Conception- comfort, Mom, warmth, safe. Then, the instant we are born, we feel pain. The pain endures and grows as we try to cope with it- the demon being a strong coping mechanism ( which over time could become anything from alcohol to drugs to a display of a certain personality to simply "toughening up or dealing with it"), and finally, and this is where the song takes shape, we ( me, you, Ozzy or anyone) are at the end of our 'cycle' - the pain now changing from mainly mental (daily normal stress, breakups, mortgages, rent, bills, car, kids, political views, etc., that builds up and, , , some physical- hitting ones thumb with a hammer, breaking a bone, or something for example) to much, much more physical, but age related physical. A bit more mental also I would surmise. Not our usual aches and pains but ones that we now see and feel and know that at this age will not go away, we can't work through them, we can't walk them off, they are here to stay- knee, back, hip, neck. Then of course the doctor ( White walls) brings on the pills, but what pills? Do you even want to take these pills? Do the doctors even believe you? Is the pain in your knee or in a nerve in your neck mimicking that pain, or is it psychosomatic? Then, , what pills now? Should I take them? Just sometimes? Am I "going nuts"? Do people think I'm crazy? One thing is for sure- you know your going to die with that pain. You look in the mirror and 30 years have passed in an instant and you don't know that old person who's looking back at you. Whether that pain is imagined or not. ( At Ozzy's age I would think he knows) Death [Sun going down, animals cry (( I think the animals may be us, his fans)), a sound you won't forget- a memory to take with him when he goes]- Finally 9, cats have nine lives, he's been a "patient" eight times depending on how you define it and this is the last maybe, once one gets to a certain point in life and knows this is imminent, one reflects on ones life ( Ozzy's 9 transforming into 666 as he is the Prince of Darkness, the bat scene. I'm sure Sharon plays a role in this part but I can't nail it down, , , yet. A general play on his career.) Mental pain becoming a stronger feeling of being alone, kids grown, regrets, less friends and the like. I also believe that the title is also partly just a title, just that, a title, maybe one to make people like us think and talk about it as he laughs his ass off. This is my take on it anyhow. I did find interesting moment/s however, and I'm sure there are more that I have missed...

1:02 - It sure looks to me like a play on Dio's Holy Diver Album Cover....shortly after is the snake through the nostril, cocaine of course.

Also throughout parts of the video, the background screams Planet Caravan. Your thoughts?

Did you know he said he drew all the arts in between the video. No, he was put on too many pills after his 5 surgeries in the last 2 years. Sharon told the doctors you need to help us Wein him off coming from having the drug addictions.

Did you realize that songs like Gets Me Through, Let Me Hear You Scream, and now even the new song could mean his inner live especially what the videos show

The meaning obviously refers to years of struggling with drugs.

Ever heard of occam's razor? Simplest explanation is probably the right one. My take is that it's "Reverse" Bark at the moon. In that song, he gets out and leaves the demon behind. In Patient number 9, he's trapped with his/the demon(s). My reason for this? Ozzy doesn't write the script for the video, he just wrote the song. Nice try though.

-This is really extremely well written and thought out. You can think about it for a long time. After all, some people lock themselves up out of inner fears and often worry too much when everyone is mainly concerned with themselves. In reality, you are often the one who triggers this (Devil) and is responsible for it, but at the same time you are the one who can dissolve it (God). It's like being in conflict with yourself.
