What Makes It A Grail?

I recently received a comment on a video and it sparked the inspiration to make this one! I think we can all agree on the general definition of what a "grail" is, but what tends to make a knife a "grail" for you? I would love to know!

Using the provided affiliate links helps support the channel and gives me the ability to put more knives back in your hands!! Thanks for the support!

All valid and excellent points you touched on, even a 50 dollar knife can be a grail knive, as you know bro I had just gotten my holy grail knife, for me it was about finding a blacksmith that forges his own, is well known, and that I could customize it how I see Fit, also it has all the functions I wanted in a grail knife, chest rig, mosaic pins, the price, it was the most expensive knive I've ever bought, so for me the grail is something I had been paying down on layaway for months and got to have a good input on the build process, for me that's my version of a grail

Price, materials, availability, or customization.

Great vid As usual. I have ping ponged on grill knives. It's really something that has to speak to me and be really up my alley style wise. For years I have wanted a grayman satu ti ti, but they're just so expensive and almost impossible to get ahold of that I've sort of given up. I have one grall right now and literally it's just about the style and the company. I will eventually save up and get it.

My grail was owning a Randall, it’s a very prestigious brand when you live in Florida.

Most of my grails are knives I know I would use, but I haven't yet been able to justify the cost to myself yet. I mean, I can afford them, but there's always something else I feel I need to spend the money on first. So they end up in the "some day" column as upgrades to what I currently have.

You're right, a grail is totally subjective. My first one was the 943. You hit all the right variables, well said.

As much as I love knives, I don't have many, and haven't really spent more than $40. A Damasscus Elementum practically checks the "Grail" boxes for me.

For me a grail can be just as simple as a knife I really want. My last one was an ad 15 and it came up on sale around Christmas and I was able to get one. All the factors you talked about influence my grail list but I think price is probably the biggest factor in getting a grail. Their are several knives on my list that I would love to own but I don't actively try simply because of the high price tag. But that's the beauty of the grail list the time and savings that go into getting one along with the hunt to get one is alot of fun. Great video my friend 👍

Like others, my grails in the past have been money that made it a dream/grail. But there are 3 that were availability problems. My first was a Buck Master (in early '80's) before they became available to the public, they were issued to Marines (if I remember correctly). Then was a Hinderer XM-24 Swedged Spear, last one was a Hinderer XM-18 3.5 Bowie.

A grail is any knife that someone feels a strong sense of emotional attachment to. I got a custom made Benchmade Mini-Grip for Christmas from my wife. I designed it, she bought it. It has one purple scale, one green scale, the sheepsfoot blade with the hole, it has a fleur de lis lasered on both sides of the blade, and I put a MXG bronzed titanium deep carry clip on it. Purple, Green, and Gold the colors of Mardi Gras! It screams New Orleans! New Orleans is one my fav places in the world and now I have a Benchmade (a knife I never thought I would drop the $160 on) and a knife I always wanted. Most people would look at this knife an think it is one the ugliest things they have every seen. Not me, I "designed" this thing and I love it to death. It is a grail for me.

I think that’s a good explanation for Grail “A knife that is hard to attain or afford.” But once a grail🔪 always a grail🔪...IMO.🤷🏻‍♂️ Doesn’t matter if it’s auto or fixed or slip. Thx Red👊🏼

For me a grail knife is usually an antique knife bearing the marks of the original owner, the marks of the original creator or the marks of a family member. At rare times I do purchase a limited edition knife that is numbered, but it has to be from an artist I like & follow and a design I really like -but I do not consider those limited edition knives as my grail knife.

All the reasons you gave fit the bill..for me where all knives are legal the three main proponents would be 1)Desire 2) Cost 3) Availability ....that said my current quest is the Spyderco Janisong..

Price can absolutely make a knife a grail knife! I can’t regularly buy knives over $100 as I live on a fixed income! I bought MY grail knife that I wanted for 5 years last year, a $250 STEDEMON knife! The only reason I was able to get that knife is because of a generous cash gift!

I really enjoyed your video 👍🏻 my grail knives are just whatever I fall in love with. Coincidentally they almost always happen to be expensive and limited runs haha

Cost and availability would have to be the two main factors. My grail for the longest time was a sebenza and once I bought one my urge to buy another knife really diminished. It took me a long time to be willing to carry it but I enjoy it every day I carry it.

As regards a grail, I’d like a really smart Medford Pretorian Ti, but that’s really just about money. If I had the money, I could order it today, so its hardly a quest. So my real grails are probably worth only £100-£150, but there were only ever 6-8 of them made. I bought one by chance, but I’d love to find some of the others, just because they’re absolutely limited in supply as the maker died. They are Taylor’s Eye Witness Premier knives made by the late Gavin Wright.
