Anatomy of the Spine | Model

Ninja Nerds!

Join us in this lecture where Professor Zach Murphy will be discussing the anatomy of the spine through the use of a model. The structures we discuss are the spinal dura mater, the arachnoid mater, pia mater, epidural space, dorsal root ganglion, and the horns of spinal cord and white columns. We hope you enjoy this lecture and be sure to support us below!

Correction: There is only one layer of the SPINAL Dura Mater. This is different in comparison to the Dura Mater in the brain which has a two layers: an outer perisoteal layer and an inner meningeal layer. Another important note is that cell bodies are not myelinated, only axons are myelinated. Thanks!

Re-watching this entire playlist as a refresher before starting my first PA job in neurosurgery! I've recommended these videos to all of my new grad neurosurgery friends!
You're a lifesaver!

Anterior white column --- crude touch and pressure
Lateral white column --- pain and temperature
Dorsal white column --- fine touch and proprioception

Layers from outside to inside
Dura Mater (periosteal layer)
Epidural Space with blood vessels and fat
Dura Mater (meningeal layer)
Subdural space with bridging veins
Arachnoid Mater
Sub arachnoid space with CSF
Pia Mater directly clinging to spinal cord

The spinal cord dura mater has no periosteal layer. The epidural space is found between the dura mater and the ligamentum flava

Love the detail. Just need descriptions on the video itself i.e. each part pointed to. Thanks!!

You teach better than nearly every single lecturer at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Medical School. Yes, I said it.

Is there conflicting information in anatomy about the spinal cord meninges? As far as I could find, there is only 1 layer of dura in the spinal column and 2 around the brain. The layer labeled "5" superficial to the epidural space should be the ligamentum flavum and anteriorly on the posterior aspect of the vertebral body, the posterior longitudinal ligament. I don't think naming conventions would call this an epidural space if it was really intermediate to 2 layers of dura.

I have a doubt. You say that the epidural space is between the 2 layers of dura mater. So, if It is "epi-dural", It means epi=Upon; It is upon dura mater and It can not be between its 2 layers.
The definition that you give here, actually is in contrast with the definition of epidural space in the skull, where It Is between periosteal layer of dura mater and the bone.
So I do not know why also some Books and Wikipedia and you say that definition. It does not make sense. When you speak about epidural hematoma, you see blood between the bone and dura mater in the epidural space in the skull. How can you give 2 different meanings about the location of the epidural space? I need an explanation. Thanks
