Scott Joplin (c. 1867/1868? -- April 1, 1917) was an African-American composer and pianist. Joplin achieved fame for his ragtime compositions, and was later titled "The King of Ragtime". During his brief career, he wrote 44 original ragtime pieces, one ragtime ballet, and two operas. One of his first pieces, the "Maple Leaf Rag", became ragtime's first and most influential hit, and has been recognized as the archetypal rag.

My brother died just over 30 years ago and this was played at his funeral, he was a great Scott Joplin fan. Five months later we played it a my Mother's funeral.

Always reminds me of my late sister. She was a pianist and we both loved this tune. It is very thought provoking. Written by Joplin who was self taught but born to early in life.

A genius who died in poverty in 1917 at age 59, without knowing the great success until Marvin Hamlish arranged for "The Entertainer", "The Solace" and other great songs of Joplin, were on the soundtrack "the Sting" "The Sting" in 1973, a total success, his compositions posthumously won an Oscar for Best Song, bilboard awards etc ... but justice takes arrives!
