Solace, Scott Joplin (Early-Advanced Piano Solo)

TEACHER DEMO
This is an excellent first Scott Joplin song to learn. It is a slower tempo than most of his other songs, but gives a great introduction to his syncopated style which is an essential component of the Ragtime era. Scott Joplin is known as the "Ragtime King" and his songs have been enjoyed for over 100 years.

This performance is the second half of his song called "Solace - A Mexican Serenade". This is the portion that is most often used in movies (such as "The Sting") and videogames (such as "Bioshock Infinite"). --Norma

Thank you. Such a beautiful song and love the relaxed doggie paw as a visual.

Nicely played, really gives it a Western saloon feel and also a classical one at the same time. I remember playing this in high school. Thanks so much for posting :D

Always wanted to learn this piece, since seeing The Sting (more than a few years ago). Nicely played, and since I had some rare spare time this weekend, the video is helping me piece it together. Not as easy to discern straight from the record as I originally thought. Thanks for posting!

The choice of piano Hamlisch used was very key to the "Sound" of this piece. It is not a Steinway's grandness. It is a Bluthner which has a slightly different tone. More along the lines of the Ragtime piano of the 20's. Nicely played. I am trying to learn this. Being a new piano player it is quite an intimidating piece. It sounds easy but it is not.

I was trying to see how bad my fingering was (I'm self taught for this song) compared with yours, and I noticed that you play an E bass instead of a G at the beginning of the 77th bar (23rd here, since you didn't record the first part of the piece), both times, and I wanted to ask, if you don't mind, if this was the way you were taught or if it was something you came up with or something you read on a sheet... It sounded perfectly right to me: I'm asking just because I'm curious (my sheet there reports a G). And if we play E there (with A and C on the Right Hand), where are we? In C6? This is a super charming piece, by the way, that I always wanted to learn. And you play if fantastically well 😊. Best regards, Enrico.

Thanks so much for this. I'm working on playing this. This may be a silly question but i don't feel comfortable hitting black notes with my little finger. should i work on that or just do my thing?

The sound would benefit from more legato in the right hand.
