Ukraine: how winter could change the war - expert explains

After 10 months of war, Russian advances and Ukrainian counter-offensives, winter weather has arrived in Ukraine.

Russia may have retreated from Kherson in early November but Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure over the last month signal a new phase of the war, as Putin weaponises the cold weather.

So as parts of Ukraine plunge into sub-zero temperatures and pressure mounts on Putin to negotiate, how might this war evolve as we enter the winter months?

In today’s episode of the Fourcast, we speak to our international editor Lindsey Hilsum - who is currently on her fifth trip to Ukraine since the war began - about what it’s like to be in the muddy trenches with Ukrainian soldiers, Russia’s culture war against Ukraine and if we can expect the war to slow down in the coming months.

All reports from Lindsey's recent trip to Ukraine were produced by Rob Hodge and filmed and edited by Josh Ho.

Lindsay, please advise the Ukranians to dig small water scoop drain holes in the trench. These are the size of a bucket, to the side of where you are walking, just big enough to catch the water in the trench which can be scooped out in a bucket.
Construction workers do this in order to keep the ground they are walking on dry.
The water will drain off into the scoop hole.
Allows the ground to dry and firm up.
Make it easier to walk, keeps boots drier.

Superb reporting. Sad poem.

What a charmingly elegant & articulate lady who clearly has some nerve and finger on the pulse of this conflict - I think there will be many more poems of the deeds of this war

When the Russian soldiers fully grasp the extent to which they have been exploited, I hope they rip the Kremlin to pieces.

Potemkin built potemkin village, just like Putin built potemkin army. They are pretty much alike🤣

She is amazing and her report about the war is trustworthy. I am saying this because I follow closely this war as a Ukrainian who has friends and family there in Ukraine. My mum and my brother are still in occupied territory at the left bunk of Dnipro. Lindsay gave a precise picture of what is happening in Ukraine right now. Thank you very much for your strong position and your bravery.

Strong Junior Officers and NCO’s are paramount to keep moral up. A boot is more likely to stay positive when he shares the experience with more senior stronger guys that set the example. Good Sargents are extremely important.

What incredibly charismatic, intelligent, brave and insightful reporting from Lindsey Hilsum and her team. I saw her report from the frontline trenches a little while back and was immediately struck by how genuine and empathetic it was. The DOP's work was first class as was the editing. One of the best reports I have seen during this conflict. I hope to see more!

Ch4 produced intellectual journalists over past decades. John Snow, Lindsey Hilsum, Matt Frei, etc. Ch4 news, the only news that I regularly watch.

so we only can hope, that Europe/Germany itself will be able to maintain its own energie supply without a blackout .... generators and diesel tanks are even hard to acquire in switzerland 🇨🇭

Lindsey and her team are absolute heros. Shining a light on the people of Ukraine. However, as much as I love her, I worry more for the people who live there and have no escape.

Lindsey should take out every award possible for her reporting and bravery, while under constant bombing and being shot at by snipers she held her cool and gave us the plain and simple truth, this is why I watch Channel 4 Thank you so much Lindsey please stay safe you are one of a kind a real precious gem!

I see videos of Ukrainian troops with cats and dogs. I have not seen similar videos of Russian troops! One suspects the cats and dogs would be in a pot?
