J.S. Bach Invention no. 13 in A minor (Piano)

This is the first 2-part invention I ever learned back in my childhood. These 2-part inventions pit 2 different melodic lines against each other in glorious counterpoint. These set of 15 inventions are a wonderful introduction to Bach's style.

=====(The Details/Performer's Notes)=====

Bach predates the piano and there's a lot of debate around the performance practice of his pieces on modern instruments let alone a digital keyboard. Pedal use, tempo, articulation and the like are all left up to the performer in these pedagogical pieces. As such performances can vary wildly. For me personally, I have no qualms about using the pedal to create resonance to taste whereas others staunchly believe Bach should never have pedal (because keyboards didn't usually have a pedal back then). Let me know where on the spectrum you lie.

Your Pianist,

Erik C.

P.S. This is sorta a filler arrangement as I work on larger projects that just need more time in the oven. Expect another vid in a week or so.

Think of this as a short 'filler' video between larger uploads. Though, do not underestimate these inventions. They are trickier than they sound to play well.

You're right, Bach inventions are so tricky. Attempted this years ago. Anyway, I like this one in particular. Smooth and clean playing!

What I love about your playing is you have this continuity. Idk how to explain it. I hear it especially in this invention. Everything feels connected. ❤

One of my favorite Bach pieces when I was learning as a youth too lol

Nice playing! This has always been one of my favorites from the Inventions.

I just recently went back to playing through them; such fun pieces to revisit! Really feels like you can play the same piece differently every time; like how when two singers collaborate the song is never quite the same.

Played this a few years ago myself and was surprised how difficult it was to get it to sound just right. I should probably revisit it now... !!

Beautifully played <3
I've been meaning to learn more Bach myself in order to improve my technique but it only just memorizing these inventions is already a challenge^^'

I'm practicing this also. What I love is 0:39 where you play the second and the fourth of the four descending parts piano. Those dynamics are putting more depth into the piece. What I despise is your ending where you put that darker extra lower note. Unnecessary and unsettling. The whole piece is meant to be joyful but you end it as a funeral piece.

I learned this song when I was 12 and man let me tell you this is one of the most deceptive pieces I ever encountered. Despite it's relatively simple sound the fingering and pass-offs are beyond unintuitive. From what I understand the inventions were engineered deliberately to be challenging in this regard and the transition between bars and which hand is carrying the melody is very atypical especially for those raised on the true classical period and less familiar with baroque. A wonderful playing of this though it did give me a little PTSD to the days of trying to iron this out XD

I've always loved this Invention. I was mostly influenced by Glenn Gould's incredibly fast version which I practiced thousands of times attempting to duplicate :)
